Meyer Leads SCSU Football To 31-20 Victory Over Winona State
9/26/2015 5:50:00 PM | Football
Meyer's big run, a 55-yard scamper on third down late in the fourth quarter, put the Huskies offense in position to score an insurance touchdown in the victory. The final touchdown was scored by senior Ledell White on a five-yard scamper with 1:46 remaining in the game to make the final score 31-20
Sophomore running back Jaden Huff had a strong individual effort in running for 126 yards and a pair of touchdown. The touchdowns were Huff's sixth and seventh of the season. Meyer completed 18-of-30 passes for his 215 yards. Junior Jameson Parsons was on the receiving end of five of those passes for 115 yards. Parsons also had the most important play in the game when he ran for a first down, after a mis-snap on a field goal, to set the Huskies offense up for the go-ahead touchdown. The touchdown was scored by Huff on a one-yard jaunt with 6:40 remaining in the game to finish off a 14-play, 94-yard drive. The lead was the first the Huskies would have in the game.
SCSU ended the game with 535 yards of total offense (320 rushing and 215 through the air).
Carvel Graham led the defensive effort for the Huskies with seven tackles. Brady Westart totaled five tackles and a pair of sacks for SCSU.
Winona State started the offense early on a 75-yard screen passing play from Jack Nelson to Paul Preston to put the Warriors up 7-0 with 14:46 remaining in the opening quarter
The Huskies answered the opening drive score with an opening drive score of their own. Huff capped off the 10-play, 75-yard drive with his sixth run into the end zone this season. He had the big play earlier in the drive with a 25-yard rush.
WSU wrestled the lead back later in the opening quarter on Nelson's 42-yard pass to Alan May. May's diving catch in the end zone finished off the three play, 65-yard drive and gave the Warriors a 14-7 lead with 4:18 time remaining in the first quarter.
A Carter McCauley 19-yard field goal increased the Winona State lead to two scores, 17-7, with 12:23 remaining in the second quarter.
A Derek Witte 20-yard field goal put the Huskies within a score, 17-10, with 4:59 remaining in the second quarter. The field goal completed a nine play, 62-yard drive.
SCSU marched down the field and tied the game up at 17 on Meyer's five-yard touchdown run to start the second half. The run by Meyer finished off the 10-play, 75-yard drive.
Another McCauley field goal, this one from 48-yards away, gave the Warriors a 20-17 lead with 13:07 remaining in the game before SCSU scored the final two touchdowns of the contest.
The SCSU football team returns home to Husky Stadium and hosts Minnesota, Crookston on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
