St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State volleyball team fell to #2 Southwest Minnesota State University on Oct. 28 in three sets.
The Huskies (8-1, 3-12 NSIC) started the match tight with the Mustangs (20-3, 14-1 NSIC) with the teams trading off points until the Mustangs broke the 3-3 tie and quickly jumped out to 16-7 lead. The Huskies would not be able to recover despite potent offense from junior Nicole Miller and SMSU took a 1-0 set lead after winning 25-15.
The second set started much of the same way for both teams with the Mustangs committing early service errors and the teams staying tight for the first six points before SMSU got ahead of the Huskies. A service ace from Nicole Miller flashed hope for the Huskies as the pulled within three at 6-9, but the double trouble of SMSU outside hitter Taylor Reiss and Eisha Oden carried the set away from the Huskies 25-16.
The final set started heavily in the Mustangs favor as they went up 3-0 quick over the Huskies but after a St. Cloud State side out, Emily Mankowski tied the game for the Huskies with two stellar service aces to tie the game at 3-3. SMSU recovered quickly and went on a 9-1 run. The Huskies attempt to battle back was diminished as the Mustangs closed out the set and the match with a 25-12 third set win.
The Huskies were lead by Macy Weller who had 10 kills and had an outstanding hitting percentage of .429 on the night. Nicole Miller added five kills and seven digs for St. Cloud State. Marissa Kline dished out 21 assists and Clara Krenz picked up 19 digs on the night.
Southwest Minnesota State was lead by Reiss and Oden who had 13 and 12 kills respectively. Megan Larson dished out 47 assists on the night, and libero Amber Messner dug 21 for the Mustangs.
