Betsy MacDonald Named D2 Women’s Basketball HERO of The Week

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's basketball player Betsy MacDonald won the fan vote and is the D2 Women's Basketball HERO of The Week, the organization announced this afternoon, Dec 9.
MacDonald averaged 28.5 points per game last week in a pair of conference wins for the SCSU women's basketball program. She played in 72 minutes, shot 47.7 percent from the field (21-for-44), knocked down five threes, hit 83.3 percent of her free throws (10-12), pulled down seven rebounds plus totaled six assists, a block and three steals in the two games.
She began her week with a 15 point and two steal effort in the 75-62 win over Minnesota Crookston (12/2)
MacDonald then had a historic game against Bemidji State (12/3) in helping to lead the program to a 111-107 double overtime victory. She scored a career-high 42 points on 15-for-29 shooting from the field, knocked down a pair of threes and also hit 10-for-12 free throws. She also had four rebounds, four assists and a steal in the contest. Her 42 points were the second-most ever scored in a single game in the program's history. Her 15 made field goals are the third-most a player in the program has ever had.
For the season, MacDonald is tops in the conference scoring at 20.7 points per game. She is the only player in the NSIC that is averaging better than 18 points per game on the campaign. MacDonald also ranks 15th nationally in scoring. She leads the league in made threes (21), is 10th in free throw percentage (82.4) and 13th in assists per game (3.6). She has scored in double figures in each of the team's seven games this season.
MacDonald, a three-year starter, has now played in 88 games in her career with 61 starts. She is currently second all-time in free throw percentage at 86.9, while scoring 866 points and sports a career average of 9.8 points per game.
The St. Cloud State women's basketball team (5-2, 3-0 NSIC) are leading the conference in scoring (86.1), free throw percentage (77.6), field goal percentage (46.8) and three-pointers made per game (11.1). The program is also placed second in three-point percentage (39.2) and assists per game (19.6). Additionally, SCSU ranks in the top half of the conference turnover margin (+4.14 – 4th), steals (8.9 – 6th) and scoring margin (+10.7 – 6th).
SCSU is back on the court and travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. and Marshall, Minn. this weekend. The team takes on the USF Cougars tonight at 6 p.m. and then plays against the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 5 p.m.
