Softball Hosts A Pair of Doubleheaders Against Jamestown and UW-Parkside This Weekend

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (4-0) hosts a pair of opponents this weekend at the Husky Dome. The team will start off with a Friday, Feb. 12, doubleheader against University of Jamestown starting at 1 p.m. The team is then slated to take on University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 13, starting at 11 a.m.
Admission to watch this weekend's softball games at the Husky Dome are is free for all SCSU students with an ID and has a $5 entrance fee for the general public.
Notables
SCSU softball continues a stretch of 13 straight home games to start the season at the Husky Dome and hosts the 2016 Kelly Laas NSIC/MIAA Crossover Invitational from Feb. 18-21.
The invitational features 10 teams from the two conferences playing a total of 25 games over the four-day period of time. The invitational will also carry a Coaches vs. Cancer theme in honor of former Husky player Kelly Laas, who passed away in March of 2011 following a courageous battle against ovarian cancer. Laas, of Frankfort, Ill., began her softball career at St. Cloud State in 2008 and was an elementary education major. In her memory, St. Cloud State named the annual dome invite the Kelly Laas Memorial Invite beginning in the spring of 2012.

- The Huskies are 6-3 all-time against Jamestown in a series that was first played in 1993.
- SCSU has a 3-2 record against UW-Parkside and the teams first started playing against each other in 1994.
- The Jamestown Jimmies went 36-14 and 18-2 in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) last season and appeared in the championship game of the tournament championship.
- The program is predicted to place third in the NSAA this season
- The top returning hitter for the Jamestown is Rylee Perez, who hit .439 with 65 hits, five home runs and 50 RBIs last season.
- Also returning is Autumn Wang, who hit .385 with 57 hits, 12 doubles, five triples, eight home runs and 41 RBIs as a junior
- The team's top returning pitcher is lefty Hanna Dunnigan, who went 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 130 innings as a sophomore.
- UW-Parkside are also opening their season this weekend in St. Cloud.
- The Rangers will take on University of Sioux Falls for two games on Friday night before playing the Huskies on Saturday morning.
- UW-Parkside went 7-36 and 2-26 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) last season.
- The program's top returning player is sophomore Courtney Ellingson.
- Ellingson led the team with her .362 batting average, 21 runs, 46 hits, eight doubles, five home runs and 23 RBIs as a freshman.
- She was also the top pitcher that won three games with 120.1 innings pitched and 80 strikeouts.
- The Huskies went 4-0 during the opening weekend with all four wins coming over Dakota Wesleyan at the Husky Dome.
- Sophomore Veronica Wold leads the team in batting average (.556) and doubles (3) after the first four contests.
- Junior Alyssa Coletto has also started the season strong with a .533 batting average, three runs scored, a team-high eight hits, two doubles, two triples, a home run, four RBIs, 17 total bases and a 1.133 slugging percentage
- Fellow junior Rebecca Harps is batting .500 with seven hits, five runs scored, a triple and four RBIs.
- Junior Abby Bunnell is tied for the team lead with her five runs scored to go along with six hits, a double, a triple, a home run, four RBIs and 12 total bases.
- Junior Jessica Goerger has reached base safely in eight of her first 12 trips to the plate this season with her three hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches.
- Junior hurler Megan Hedstrom has won three of the team's first four games and also leads the team in innings pitched (11.2) and strikeouts (10).
- The club has a team batting average of .411, 39 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and 20 extra base hits after the opening weekend.
