SCSU baseball sweeps U-Mary on April 20

The St. Cloud State University baseball team gained a doubleheader sweep at the University of Mary on Wednesday, April 20 in Bismarck, N.D. The Huskies posted a 6-2 victory in game one and finished the day with a 12-2 victory.
SCSU's season record improves to 30-4, 15-4 NSIC, while Mary moves to 6-26, 4-15 NSIC. SCSU maintains its spot at third place in the current NSIC standings behind league leader Augustana (13-3 NSIC) and second place Minnesota Duluth (16-4 NSIC). SCSU will be idle this weekend before returning to NSIC action on April 27 with a doubleheader at Bemidji State.
The Huskies were led in the first game by Logan Spitzack, who was the pitcher of record for the Huskies with 5.2 innings of shutout pitching that including five strikeouts and five hits allowed. Tyler Gentz and Miles Nablo completed the game on the mound in relief for the Huskies.
At the plate, Zach Hoffmann led SCSU with two hits, four RBIs and two home runs. SCSU had two runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to ice the contest. Logan Swann also had two hits and one RBI in the game for SCSU.
In game two, SCSU scored in the first inning with a homer by Brandon Arnold but fell behind after Mary scored two runs in its half of the first inning. The Huskies tied the game up with one run in the top of the third inning with an RBI double by Zach Hoffmann that scored Kyle Lieser.
SCSU took command of the contest in the fourth inning with five runs by taking advantage of three hits and two errors by Mary. The Huskies capped the game with five more runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it 12-2. Reese Gregory and Mathew Meyer keyed the attack with home runs. The game was then ended in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
SCSU outhit the Marauders 15-5 in the game as Cal Giese collected the win on the mound for the Huskies in relief of starter Ryan Diers. Giese pitched 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts. He allowed no runs and only three hits in the game. David Kroger and Reese Gregory each pitched one inning of relief work to finish the contest for the Huskies.
At the plate, Gregory had three hits, a double, a home run and three RBIs in the game to pace the SCSU offense. Arnold, Hoffmann and Jackson Goplen all had two hits in the game, while Lieser had three runs scored for SCSU.
The three homers on the day helped the Huskies set a new team record for most homers in a season with 65. The previous record of 62 home run was set in 2015. Gregory currently paces the Huskies this spring with 13 home runs.
