
Heather Miller-Koch Places 18th at Rio Olympics in the Heptathlon

RIO DE JANEIRO - Heather Miller-Koch, a former St. Cloud State University women's track & field and women's basketball athlete, placed 18th at the Rio Olympics in the heptathlon when the final event was completed at Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening.
Miller-Koch started the meet by placing third in her heat with 13.56 in the 100m. She then finished third in Group B in the high jump with her 1.80m. In the shot put, Miller-Koch finished 11th in her heat with 12.91m/42'4.25". In the 200m, she finished eighth in the third heat with a 24.97 in the final event of Friday.
On Saturday, Miller-Koch had a 6.16m in the long jump to place ninth in Group A. She then earned eighth in Group A in the javelin with her throw of 40.25m before finishing the competition with a personal-best 2:06.82 in the 800m in winning the first heat.
Miller earned 6,213 points to place 18th overall. Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium won the heptathlon and the gold medal with her 6,780 points. Jessica Ennis-Hill of Great Britain finished second and took the silver medal with 6,775 points. Brianne Theisen of Canada picked up the bronze in third place with 6653 points.
Miller-Koch became the 13th former SCSU student to compete in the Olympics this year. Other former SCSU students to compete in the Olympics over the years include: Ann Govednik Van Steinburg (1932 and 1936 Summer Games in swimming), Matt Cullen (2006 Winter Games in hockey), Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006 Winter Games in hockey), Mark Parrish (2006 Winter Games in hockey), Van Nelson (1968 Summer Games in men's track and field), Jim Hazewinkel (1968 and 1972 Summer Games in Wrestling), Dave Hazewinkel (1968 and 1972 Summer Games in Wrestling), Ryan Malone (2010 Winter Games in hockey), Andreas Nodl (2014 Winter Games in hockey for Team Austria), Bruce Thompson (1976 Summer Games in Wrestling), Tami Jameson (1992 Summer Games in Team Handball), Toni Jameson (1992 Summer Games in Team Handball).
At SCSU, Miller-Koch was the 2010 NCAA DII Pentathlon National Championship and was a 10-Time NCAA DII Track & Field All-American and a 15-Time NSIC Champion. She broke 10 SCSU School Records during her college career and set NSIC records in the pentathlon, indoor and outdoor triple jump, the heptathlon and outdoor long jump. In 2010, Miller-Koch was named the 2010 USTFCCCA National Field Athlete of the Year.
