Second Half Surge Leads Football to 31-7 Victory Over MSU Moorhead

St. Cloud, Minn.  – Junior Gregory Lewis scampered for a career-high 128 yards on the ground to lead the St. Cloud State football team (5-2, 2-1 NSIC North) to a 31-7 victory over visiting MSU Moorhead (2-5, 0-3 NSIC North) on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Husky Stadium.
Lewis carried the ball 18 times for his 128 yards for a 7.1 yards per carry average. He also scored a rushing score for the sixth time this season. Junior Curtwan Evans recorded 17 attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Dwayne Lawhorn was 16 for 31 in the contest for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Junior John Pass caught five passes for 78 yards and touchdown. Redshirt freshman receiver Derek Kumerow picked up five catches for 52 yards and a score. Senior Gary Koehring led the defense with his eight tackles including a pair of stops for loss. Fellow senior Brady Westart totaled seven tackles and a pair of sacks. Senior Jerry Duckworth had four tackles plus three pass breakups. Junior Kenny Reid had a pair of tackles for loss. Junior Jamari Manuel and senior Carvel Graham both picked off passes. For Graham it was his fourth interception of the season including his second in as many games.

SCSU picked up 365 yards with 188 on the ground and 177 in the air. The St. Cloud State defense limited MSU Moorhead to 193 total yards including 66 on the ground. The defense also had five sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
The Dragons were led by Hunter Braaten's eight catches for 97 yards. Damon Gibson was limited to one catch, but had a nine-yard rushing touchdown.
MSUM scored first as Gibson ran it in from a yard out to finish off a 13 play, 67-yard drive at the 13:28 mark. Ruan Albuquerque knocked in the extra point to give the Dragons their only lead of the afternoon at 7-0.
SCSU answered as Kumerow caught a four-yard pass from Lawhorn to finish off a 13 play, 77-yard drive with 6:18 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point from freshman Adam Stage was good to tie the contest at seven.
The Huskies took the lead for good in the start of the third quarter as Pass caught a 16-yard pass from Lawhorn to complete the five play, 61-yard drive and make the score 14-7 after the made Stage extra point at the 10:05 mark.

SCSU made it a two score contest as Stage knocked in a 37-yard field goal to finish off a 10 play, 53-yard drive and give the Huskies a 17-7 lead with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter.
Lewis' ran for 27-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to put SCSU up 24-7 with 5:18 remaining after the Stage made extra point.
SCSU finished off the scoring with Evans scampering in from a four yards out to complete a two play, 40-yard drive with 2:22 remaining in the contest and make the final margin 31-7 after the made extra point from Stage.
St. Cloud State gets on the road next week with a trip to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the University of Mary on Oct. 21 at 3:30 p.m.
