Adam Stage Sets School Record With 55-Yard Field Goal
Bismarck, N.D. – Sophomore Curtwan Evans ran for 128 yards and junior Gregory Lewis totaled 121 rushing yards to lead the St. Cloud State football team (6-2, 3-1 NSIC North) to a 33-7 victory over the University of Mary (1-7, 1-3 NSIC North) on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Community Bowl.
For Evans it was a season-best as he picked up his 128 on 25 carries (5.1 yards per carry). He also ran for a touchdown. Lewis totaled a pair of touchdowns along with his 121 yards on the ground on 25 carries (4.8 yards per carry). With a stiff and ever-present wind, SCSU sophomore quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn was held to seven completion for 73 yards. He did run for a touchdown though. Senior Cole Otto caught three passes for 30 yards. Freshman Adam Stage set a new school record with 55-yard made field goal early in the fourth quarter. It was one of two field goals that Stage made as he set a prior then career-high with a 48-yard made field goal in the first half. Stage also knocked in three extra points for nine points in the contest. Senior Gary Koehring led the defense with his seven tackles. Junior Jack Horter totaled seven tackles plus a forced and recovered fumble. Senior Brady Westart recorded six tackles plus a forced and recovered fumble.
SCSU picked up 327 yards with 254 on the ground and 73 in the air. The St. Cloud State defense held the University of Mary to 244 total yards with 183 on the ground and only one completed pass. The team also won time of possession for the seventh time in the last eight games with 39:41 including holding onto the ball for all 15 minutes of the third quarter.
University of Mary was led by Devin Hope's 57 yards rushing. DeShawn Gay had a 61-yard touchdown reception.
The Huskies scored first with Lewis running it in from three-yards out with 12:17 remaining in the opening quarter. The extra point was missed to keep the score at 6-0. The team got the ball after Horter forced and recovered a fumble on UMary's opening possession.
The defense forced a fumble on the Marauders second possession as well to give the offense a short field. The team capitalized with Stage drilling a 48-yard field goal to put SCSU up 9-0 with 8:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
The game remained 9-0 until UMary connected on their only completion of the game as the option-based team got a receiver behind the defense and connected with Gay for a 61-yard touchdown from Nick McCann with 1:55 remaining in the first half. The Cody Goetz extra point was good to make the halftime score 9-7.
The Huskies dominated the third quarter and controlled the ball for all 15 minutes. The team started the quarter with the ball and marched down the field on a 19 play, 75-yard drive that was finished on a Lawhorn three-yard rush. The Stage extra point was good to put SCSU up 16-7 with 2:57 remaining in the quarter.
The team then successfully executed an on-side kick to get the ball back as Stage recovered his own kick. The Huskies promptly put together a seven play, 29-yard drive that was finished on a Lewis one-yard run to put the score at 23-7 with 14:17 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Stage broke the school record on the team's next possession when he hit a 55-yard field goal. The field goal broke the school's previous record of Paul Norby. Norby had a 50-yard made field goal against Northern Colorado in 1993. The field goal increased SCSU's lead to 26-7 with 11:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
St. Cloud State completed the scoring as Evans ran it in from two-yards out to finish off a nine play, 80-yard drive with 1:56 remaining in the contest and make the final score 33-7.
St. Cloud State now returns home to host Northern State on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
Notes: Gregory Lewis' 121 yard rushing was the third straight week where he has broken the 100-yard mark… Curtwan Evans 128 yards was his second career 100-yard rushing day and first time since the 2015 season (Minot State – 10/17/15) that SCSU has had multiple 100-yard rushers in the same game (Evans – 148 yards, Ledell White – 106 yards and Jaden Huff – 102 yards)…the team's 254 rushing yards was a season high and the fourth time the program has topped 200-yards rushing in a contest this season….with six wins this season the program is guaranteed a winning record for the ninth time in the last 10 campaigns.
