
Lawhorn Ties School Passing Touchdown Record to Lead Football to 53-27 Victory Over Minnesota Crookston

Lawhorn connected on 13 of 24 passes for 327 yards and five touchdowns. His five touchdowns tied the school record set by four former players and was last accomplished by Phillip Klaphake against Minnesota Duluth during the 2012 season. It was also Lawhorn's first game with more than 300 yards passing in his career.

Junior Gregory Lewis led the rushing attack for SCSU with 11 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Curtwan Evans picked up 81 yards rushing on his 17 carries. Sophomore John Solberg was the favorite target with four catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Junior John Pass caught three passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Anthony Carver made his one catch count for 30 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman Luke Shepherd also had a 13 yard touchdown on his only reception. Senior Gary Koehring led the defense with his 10 tackles plus a forced and recovered fumble. Fellow senior Craig Szymanski totaled four tackles plus a pair of sacks. Senior Carvel Graham had two tackles plus his second interception return for touchdown this season.

SCSU was able to pick up a season-high 564 yards on the day. The program ran for 237 and completed passes for 327. The program also had 20 first downs and controlled the clock for 34:16. The defense also forced three turnovers and had a season-high 12 tackles for loss plus six sacks.
UMC was led by Jeremy Neuman's 21 completions for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Adam Connette was the primary receiver with nine catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Rod Stewart also caught a pair of touchdown passes.
The Huskies jumped out to a lead in the first three minutes of the game with Lewis running for a 27-yard touchdown to finish off a seven play, 63-yard drive and make the score 7-0 after the made extra point from freshman Adam Stage with 12:21 remaining in the opening frame.
UMC answered and tied the game up at seven on a 10-yard Neuman pass to Stewart to complete an eight play, 75-yard drive after the made extra point from Stephen Day.
The Huskies quickly answer on a one-play Lawhorn to Solberg 62-yard pass to put SCSU up 14-7 with 9:21 remaining in the first quarter after the made Stage extra point.
Graham returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown to start the second quarter and give SCSU a 21-7 lead after the Stage made extra point with just seven seconds expired in the second quarter.
UMC cut the deficit to seven with Neuman connecting with Connette on a two-yard touchdown to finish off a one play drive after an SCSU turnover. The Day extra point was good to make the score 21-14 with 11:51 remaining in the second quarter.
Shepherd made his first career catch count as it went for a 13-yard touchdown to finish off a seven play, 65-yard drive and put the score at 28-14 after the made Stage extra point with 8:53 remaining in the second.
Solberg made another race for the end zone next as he took a short pass all the way for 78 yards to put the score at 35-14 with 5:19 remaining in the second stanza after Stage nailed the extra point.
UMC would score next with Connette hauling in a 20-yard Neuman pass to put the score at 35-21 with 3:29 remaining in a very high scoring second quarter.
The Huskies would score one more touchdown before the break with Pass catching a 50-yard touchdown pass from Lawhorn to double up UMC 42-21 with 1:18 remaining in the half after a made Stage extra point.
Stage started the SCSU third quarter with his sixth made field goal of the season, this one from 22 yards out, to give St. Cloud State a 45-21 lead at the 12:34 mark of the third.
UMC Stewart score his second touchdown of the game on a 37-yard pass from Neuman. The two-point conversion failed to keep the score at 45-27 with 10:12 remaining in the third quarter.
The Huskies completed the game's scoring with Carver catching a 30-yard touchdown pass with just :45 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The two-point conversion from Solberg to Graham Miller was good to make the final score 53-27.
St. Cloud State keeps the home stand going and hosts MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. at annual Celebrate! Game at Husky Stadium.

Notes:  Dwayne Lawhorn's five touchdowns is the eighth time in school history that an SCSU quarterback has thrown five touchdowns in a game (Phillip Klaphake – 1x; Dan Kaczor – 1x; Keith Heckendorf – 4x; Mike Leivermann – 1 x)…In his last two starts at quarterback Lawhorn was thrown for nine touchdowns and accounted for 10…the 103 rushing yards from Gregory Lewis was SCSU's second 100-yard rushing performance of the season (Joe Blando – 163 yards against SMSU – 8/31)…John Solberg's 151 yards receiving was his second time with 100 or more yards receiving this season (103 yards vs. SMSU – 8/31).
