Moorhead, Minn. – St. Cloud State's softball team (27-19, 11-9 NSIC) got back to the winning ways with a sweep of MSU Moorhead (8-29, 3-17 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 19, at MSUM Softball Field. The program won the first contest 1-0 and took the second game of the double dip by a 4-0 margin.
Senior Megan Hedstrom (13-9) was the game one winner in allowing just two hits in throwing her third shutout of the season. She also allowed three walks with six strikeouts in her 12th complete game of the campaign.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (12-8) surrendered just three hits and struck out a career-high 12 with no walks in picking up the second game victory. The shutout was her third of the season.
Junior Libby Bingham tallied a pair of hits and RBIs. Freshman Maya Keating totaled two hits. Senior Rebecca Harps had two hits plus a walk and two runs scored. Sophomore Jaiden Lund had a pair of hits plus a walk along with an RBI. Seniors Jessica Goerger and Alyssa Coletto both had two hits. Freshman Alexis Jacobs recorded an RBI and also scored a run.
Game One
The Huskies scored the game's only run in the opening frame. Senior Abby Bunnell walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Keating, stole third and came in to score on the throwing error from the MSU Moorhead catcher off the successful stolen base.
MSU Moorhead's best chance to score came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Payton Gaber singled. Taylor Kelenic ran for Gaber and moved to second on a Savanah Tweet sacrifice bunt. A ground out moved her to third, but that was as far as she could get as Hedstrom recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Jordan Hall (1-13) took the loss despite only allowing one unearned run in a complete game with a strikeout and four hits allowed.
Game Two
St. Cloud State scoring two runs in the second inning to start the scoring. Coletto reached on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Morgan Emmans followed with a walk. Freshman Alexis Jacobs hit into a fielder's choice to eliminate Coletto at third. Bingham drove in both Emmans and Jacobs with her base hit.
The Huskies added a run in the third inning. Harps started the frame with a lead-off single and moved to second on a Coletto sacrifice bunt. Harps moved to third on a fly out and scored on Lund's RBI single.
The program finished off the scoring with a run in the fifth inning on a Jacobs sacrifice bunt to score Harps from third. Harps started the rally by reaching on a dropped ball by the MSUM catcher.
Tori White (4-9) was tagged with the loss in allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits.
The Huskies now return home and continue NSIC play by hosting Sioux Falls for two games on Saturday, April 22, beginning at 12 p.m.
