Softball Splits Pair Against Sioux Falls

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (28-20, 12-10 NSIC) split the team's two games against Sioux Falls (26-21, 13-9 NSIC) on Saturday, April 22, at Selke Field. The program won a 3-2 thriller in the first game and fell in the second contest by a 13-4 score.
Senior Megan Hedstrom (14-9) was the game one winner in surrendering two runs, one walk with one strikeout in throwing her 13th complete game of the season.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (12-9) took the loss in the second game for SCSU in surrendering nine runs (four earned) in six innings of work with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Senior Abby Bunnell led the offense with five hits and two RBIs. Freshman Anna Roth tallied a pair of hits and RBIs. Junior Libby Bingham totaled two hits. Freshman Maya Keating, senior Jessica Goerger and freshman Alexis Jacobs also had a pair of hits on the afternoon. Keating also stole two bases. Sophomore Jaiden Lund cross the plate three times.
Game One
The Huskies scored first with two runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Morgan Emmans had a pop up single that was lost in the sun. She stole second and was followed by a walk from Lund. Roth hit a soft single to left to score a charging Emmans. A single from Bingham loaded the bases. A mishandled ball off the bat of Bunnell allowed Lund to scamper home with the second run of the game.
SCSU added a run to the lead with a tally in the sixth inning. Lund reached on a lead-off single, stole second and scored on Bunnell's triple to the left centerfield gap.
The Cougars would not go quietly in the seventh as Jasmine Ragusi walked. Miranda White ran for Ragusi and went to second on Kerrigan Hoshaw's single. Bailey Burnes was inserted to run for Hoshaw and moved to second as White took third on Breanna Black's single. A wild pitch the next offered moved all the runners up a base and scored White. An unusual fielder's choice allowed Kenna Heath to reach base and eliminated Burnes at the plate, but also scored Black from second with the second run.
Hoshaw (11-9) took the loss for the Cougars in the day's opener with six innings worked three runs allowed (two earned) and four strikeouts
Game Two
The Cougars scored first with two runs in the opening frame. Emma Schifferle picked up a lead-off base hit and scored on Sydney Nieveen's two-run home run to left field.
USF added to the lead with a run in the third inning. Nieveen reached on an infield single and scored on Heath's RBI single.
SCSU got two runs closer in the bottom of the frame. Bunnell hit a lead-off single and moved to second on Keating's sacrifice bunt. Coletto drew a two-out walk to put a pair of runners on base. Emmans reached base on a wild pitch strike out to score Bunnell. On the play, Coletto moved all the way to third. She came in to score the team's second run of the frame on a called illegal pitch with Jacobs at the plate.
The Cougars answered with two runs in the fifth inning. Nieveen reached on an error and scored just ahead of Hoshaw's two-run home run to right field.
Hoshaw struck again in the sixth inning with a grand slam to put the Cougars up 9-2.
SCSU inched two runs closer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jacobs reached on a single and moved to second as Lund reached on an error. Roth then knocked a ball against the wall to score Jacobs. Bunnell followed with a push a single up the middle to score Lund with the team's second run of the frame and fourth run of the game.
Sioux Falls added four more runs to the lead in the top of the seventh inning with the big hit being a bases clearing three-run double from Nieveen.
The Huskies continue NSIC play and the home stand against Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday, April 23, at Selke Field starting at 1 p.m.
