Softball Sweeps Wayne State College on Saturday, 8-2 & 6-2

Wayne, Neb. – St. Cloud State's softball team (31-21, 15-11 NSIC) swept a pair of road games from Wayne State College (11-39, 5-21 NSIC) on Saturday, April 29, at the Pete Chapman Complex by scores of 8-2 and 6-2. The games are the last of the regular season for SCSU with the Augustana series being canceled due to weather.
Megan Hedstrom (15-9) was the game one winner for SCSU in going the distance for her 14th complete game of the season. She allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with six walks and four strikeouts.
Sophomore Kate Kopeck (14-9) was the second game winner for the Huskies in scattering seven hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in her 14th complete game of the season.
Senior Rebecca Harps picked up six hits in eight at bats including a double and a home run plus four RBIs. Senior Jessica Goerger tallied four hits, a double and five RBIs. Senior Alyssa Coletto totaled four hits. Senior Abby Bunnell had three hits, two doubles and three runs scored. Freshman Maya Keating had a pair of hits and runs scored.
Game One
The Huskies scored first with three runs in the opening inning. Bunnell reached on a lead-off double and moved to third on Keating's sacrifice bunt. She scampered home with the game's first run on a wild pitch. Goerger walked and scored just ahead of Harps' two-run home run. It was Harps' third home run of the season.
SCSU added a run to the lead in the second inning. Junior Libby Bingham singled and moved to third on Bunnell's double. Keating drove in Bingham with her ground out.
St. Cloud State added three more runs in the fourth inning. Bunnell started the rally with a lead-off single. Keating followed with an infield single. Goerger plated both Bunnell and Keating with her base hit. Senior Brianne Hightshoe was inserted to run for Goerger and went to third on a wild pitch. Harps drove in Hightshoe with her single to left field.
The Huskies put up the team's eighth run of the game in the sixth inning. Sophomore Morgan Emmans walk, stole second and scored on freshman Anna Roth's two-out single.
The Wildcats scored a single tally in the sixth inning on Melanie Alyea's solo home run.
WSC finished off the team's scoring with Morgan Alyea driving in Jordyn Breitchbarth in the seventh inning.
Riley Vanderveen (2-14) took the loss for Wayne State College in allowing seven run in 3.1 innings worked.
Game Two
SCSU again scored first with three runs in the third inning. Coletto started the rally with a single through the left side. Hightshoe was inserted to run for Coletto and moved to second on freshman Alexis Jacobs' single. A sacrifice bunt from Bingham saw each runner move up a base. Keating then walked to load the bases. Goerger followed with a two-run single to left field to score Highshoe and Jacobs. Harps then doubled in Keating for the team's third run of the frame.
Wayne State answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on Alyssa Schropp's RBI single.
The Huskies scored two more runs in the fifth inning. Bunnell was hit by a pitch, stole second and then moved to third on a ground out. Goerger followed with sacrifice bunt to score a charging Bunnell from third. Harps started the second rally of the inning with her single and scored all the way from first on a misplayed ball from the WSC left fielder off the ball hit by sophomore Jaiden Lund.
Wayne State scored a single tally in the bottom of the frame on Katelyn Wobken's home run.
St. Cloud State finished off the scoring with a run in the seventh inning. Goerger reached on a one-out single. Redshirt freshman Cassie Francesconi ran for Goerger and moved to second on a single from Harps and third on Lund's single. Francesconi scored the team's sixth run of the game on an Emmans sacrifice fly.
Nataliah Hopkins (9-20) took the loss in the second game for the Wildcats in allowing five runs (two earned) in five innings worked.
The SCSU games Augustana University, that were originally scheduled for Sunday (earlier this week), rescheduled for Saturday (on Wednesday) and then moved back to Sunday (this morning), have been canceled due to weather. The program will be one of the ten teams that advances to the NSIC Softball Championship from May 4-6 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The team's seeding is to be announced in an official release from the conference office on Sunday, April 30.
