Huskies rally in the 11th to gain two-game sweep of Augustana

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (21-7, 12-4 NSIC) moved into a tie for second place in the NSIC standings with a 10-4 and 5-4 doubleheader sweep of Augustana University (18-13, 12-4 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 5 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies enjoyed a comfortable 10-2 lead after five innings to grab the win in game one. In the nightcap, the Huskies played a little OT baseball as they charted the win with a thrilling three-run rally in the bottom of the 11th inning to seal the sweep.
In game one, Augustana jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Huskies stormed back with two runs in the bottom of the second. The two teams traded runs in the third inning to give the Huskies a 3-2 edge. The game's tempo shifted in favor of SCSU with five runs scored by the Huskies in the fourth inning. The Huskies completed their attack with two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-2 lead.
Cal Giese was the pitcher of record for SCSU with 5.0 innings of work. He allowed five hits and two runs in the game and also struck out eight batters on his way to his fifth win of the year. Kyle Boser, Luke Hansen and Tyler Gentz finished the game in relief for SCSU. At the plate, SCSU outhit Augustana 12-8. Jordan Joseph had two hits and two RBIs in the game, while Zach Metzger, Logan Swann and Ethan Ibarra all had two hits apiece in the game.
In game two, the Huskies benefited from a sterling pitching effort from starter Shannon Ahern. The two teams battled through three scoreless innings before Augie gained a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Both team's went continued to roll on defense with a scoreless draw in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Huskies finally broke into the scoring column in the seventh inning with an RBI single by Bo Schmitz that score Logan Swann. SCSU took the lead on a single by Trevor Cho, which scored Schmitz. Augustana tied the game with a solo run in the top of the ninth, which pushed the contest into extra innings.
The Vikings then took the upper hand in the top of the 11th with a pair of runs before the Huskies scored the win with three runs in the bottom of the 11th. The rally opened when Judd Davis scored on an error. Cooper Maas then scored after Schmitz drew a walk. The game winner was brought home on a bases loaded wild pitch by Augustana that scored SCSU's Aaron Hammann.
Ahern pitched 8.1 innings with eight strikeouts, two runs and three hits allowed. Miles Nablo was the pitcher of record for the Huskies in the game with 0.2 innings of relief pitching in the 11th. David Kroger and Zach Siggelkow also provided relief help as the Huskies compiled a total of 11 strikeouts in the game.
The Huskies will continue their season with a pair of doubleheaders against Concordia-St. Paul. The games are currently scheduled for April 8-9 at Joe Faber Field. Please check the SCSU Athletics website for any weather related schedule changes. The potential for bad weather on April 9 may force the dates and times to be changed.
