SCSU Baseball sweeps Golden Bears on April 8

The St. Cloud State University baseball team improved to 24-8, 16-5 NSIC with a doubleheader sweep against Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, April 8 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies won game one by a 9-3 tally and then rallied late to gain an 8-5 win in game two.
The pair of wins moves SCSU back into second place in the NSIC standings. The Huskies will continue their 2017 season with important league games at Minnesota Duluth on April 11. The doubleheader in Duluth, Minn. will kick off an 8-game road swing for the Huskies that will also include games at Minnesota State, Mankato and Minnesota Crookston.
In game one, the Huskies took advantage of three consecutive home runs in the bottom of the third inning to roll to a 9-3 win.
The Huskies broke up a 0-0 deadlock in the third when Jordan Joseph blasted a two-run homer. In consecutive at-bats, Bo Schmitz carded his first home run as a Husky on the next at bat. The long ball barrage continued with Zach Metzger, who connected on another home run to make it 4-0.
In the fourth inning, the runs continued for the Huskies with runs scored by Mitch Mallek, Logan Swann and Ethan Ibarra. A triple by Judd Davis scored both Swann and Ibarra. Davis was later brought home with a sac fly by Joseph.
In the fifth inning, CSP added two runs and then posted a run in the sixth inning to make it 8-3. The Huskies final run came in the sixth inning with a run by Schmitz on a single by Mathew Meyer.
SCSU outhit the Golden Bears 10-7 in the game. The Huskies' Dominic Austing was the pitcher of record for SCSU with 5.0 innings pitched. He tallied eight strikeouts in the game with two runs allowed and five hits allowed. Zach Sigglekow completed the game with 2.0 innings of relief work, which included two strikeouts.
In game two, SCSU score two runs in the second inning to gain a 2-1 lead before CSP rallied in the fifth with three runs to go up 4-2. The Huskies narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth and then added two runs in the sixth on a Jordan Joseph homer to tie the game at 5-5.
In the eighth inning, a Mathew Meyer brought in the game winner when his single scored Judd Davis. SCSU added two more runs when Meyer and Schmitz scored on a double by MItch Mallek.
In the game, CSP outhit the Huskies 11-10. Miles Nablo improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory in relief. He pitched 3.2 innings and allowed no hits and no runs. Kevin Bolder started the game and went 4.0 innings with five strikeouts to his credit. David Kroger and Tyler Gentz also provide relief work in the win for SCSU.
The Huskies will now embark on an 8-game road swing. SCSU will play a twinbill at Minnesota Duluth on April 11. On April 14-15, the Huskies will play a pair of NSIC doubleheaders at Minnesota State, Mankato. To complete the road trip, SCSU will play at doubleheader at Minnesota-Crookston on April 18.
