St. Paul, Minn. – Sophomore quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn threw for four touchdown passes and accounted for five touchdowns in the game to lead the St. Cloud State football team (2-1) to a 56-21 victory over Concordia-St. Paul (1-2) on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Sea Foam Stadium

Lawhorn was 18 for 25 for 254 yards through the air and also carried the ball 11 times for 73 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Gregory Lewis picked up 47 rushing yards on 16 carries plus two touchdowns. Curtwan Evans recorded 15 carries for 69 yards. Senior Cole Otto totaled eight catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. Junior John Pass hauled in seven passes for 110 yards and two scores. Junior Jack Horter led the defense with six tackles including a sack.

SCSU were able to totaled 27 first downs plus 482 yards on the day. The program picked up 228 yards on the ground and 254 passing yards. The defense limited CSP to 11 first downs and 274 total yards plus forced a pair of turnovers.

The Huskies scored first with a six play, 56-yard drive that was completed on a two-yard reception to Derek Kumerow from Lawhorn. The freshman Adam Stage extra point was good to put SCSU up 7-0 at the 10:16 mark of the first quarter.

The Huskies got some fourth-down magic for the second score of the game with Lawhorn connecting with Pass on a 33-yard down touchdown. The pass completed the eight play and 69-yard drive that was finished on the Stage extra point to make the score 14-0 SCSU at the 3:54 mark of the first quarter.

Lawhorn continued his incredible first quarter in connecting with Otto for a 21-yard score. The touchdown pass finished off the three play, 23-yard drive. Stage knocked through the extra point to make the score 21-0 with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter.

The program continued a strong start to the opening half with Lewis rushing in from four-yard out to complete an eight play, 51-yard drive. The Stage extra point was good to put SCSU up 28-0 at the 6:50 mark of the second stanza.

The Golden Bears made it a 28-7 score as Maxon Hutton connected with Marcus Gustaveson for a 30-yard completion. The Jonas Schenderlein extra point was good at the 6:15 mark of the second quarter.

Lawhorn showed off his running ability on the next drive as a play action fake by the SCSU quarterback lead to him running virtually untouched down the sidelines for a 36-yard touchdown. The Stage extra point was true to finish off the seven play, 61-yard drive with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter and make the score 35-7.

CSP answered with their second score of the second quarter just before the break. Hutton threw a two-yard pass to Darnell Rolle to finish off a 12 play, 75-drive. The Schenderlein extra point was good to make the score 35-14 with just under a minute remaining in the first half.

SCSU continued a strong offensive performance with a Lawhorn to senior Cole Otto 12-yard touchdown pass midway through the three play, 39-yard drive. The Stage extra point was good to put the Huskies up 42-14.

Lewis scored his second rushing touchdown of the game and third of the season on a 16-yard touchdown run to finish off the eight play, 50-yard drive and make put the score at 49-14 with 9:23 remaining in the contest after the Stage made extra point.

CSP scored their third touchdown of the game on the 65-yard touchdown reception from Elias Arlington to make the score 49-21 with 7:25 remaining in the game after the made extra point.

The Huskies topped the 50-point mark with their eighth touchdown of the game as redshirt freshman Matt Winters rumbled in from four-yard to put the margin at 56-21 with 2:03 remaining after the made Stage extra point.

St. Cloud State now returns home to take on Augustana on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. at Husky Stadium for the Hall of Fame game

Notes: Cole Otto's 100-yard receiving game was the first of his career…The team improves to 7-2 all-time when John Pass records 100 or more receiving yards…Dwayne Lawhorn accounted for five touchdowns in the game and was the first SCSU quarterback to hit the mark since Nate Meyer against the University of Mary last season (10/8/16).
