Week Nine Game Notes
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The adage goes that all good things must to an end. While the St. Cloud State University football team has three more games on the schedule, only one will take place in the comforts of Husky Stadium. Yes, the Huskeis final home game of the regular season will take place this upcoming Saturday, October 27, when they host Bemidji State University at 1 p.m. in Husky Stadium.
St. Cloud State enters Saturday's game with a 6-2 record overall and a 6-2 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. The Huskies are also 3-1 against NSIC North opponents and will look to improve to 4-1 when they host the Beavers on Saturday. St. Cloud State is also looking to avenge last season's loss against Bemidji State, as the team gave up 10 fourth quarter points in the 17-10 defeat.
However, Saturday will serve as more than just the final home game of the 2018 season, as the Huskies will honor their seven seniors before and throughout the game. Greg Lewis (Milwaukee, Wis. / Wauwatosa West), Jamari Manuel (Madison, Wis. / East), John Pass (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove), Scott Romeo (Blooming Prairie, Minn. / Blooming Prairie), Jack Horter (Sussex, Wis. / Marquette), Jake Schley (Cudahy, Wis. / St. Thomas More) and Sam Hartman (West Des Moines, Iowa / West Des Moines Valley) are all set to graduate after the 2018 football season and have been seven of the most successful players in recent program history. In four years with St. Cloud State, these seven seniors have compiled an overall record of 23-18, scored 40 touchdowns, racked up 1491 rush yards, 2362 receiving yards and scored 242 points. On defense, they've recorded 436 tackles, 17.5 sacks and accounted for eight touchdowns, making them one of the best defensive classes in Husky history.
Fans who can't make the trek to Husky Stadium can follow the game in multiple ways. They can tune in to live stats, videoand WJON's live radio broadcast on 1390 Granite City. Updates will also be made to St. Cloud State football's Twitter account (@SCSUHuskiesFB) when time allows.
Here is special "senior" edition of the five facts you need to know before Saturday:
3 – St. Cloud State will try and snap a three-match losing streak against Bemidji State on Saturday. The Beavers have won the last three meetings against the Huskies by a combined score of 93-44, and the closest meeting between the two teams came in 2015, when Bemidji State eked out the 28-27 victory. Since then the Beavers have outscored St. Cloud State 65-17 and hold a 4-2 advantage over the Huskies in the last six meetings dating back to 2012.
23 – In four years with the football team, the seven seniors (Lewis, Manuel, Pass, Horter, Romeo, Schley and Hartman) have played in 41 total games and compiled an overall record of 23-18. The seniors also helped St. Cloud State earn its first regional ranking since the 2013 season, as the Huskies were ranked No. 9 in this past week's regional rankings, which were released Monday afternoon.
1491 – These seniors have rushed for 1491 total yards in four years with St. Cloud State. The majority of those yards have been accumulated by Lewis, who accounts for 1440 of the Huskies 1491 rushing yards despite only playing for the team in 2017 and 2018. In his two seasons with St. Cloud State, Lewis has compiled the 1440 rushing yards and recorded 12 touchdowns, scoring a combined 72 points for the Huskies along the way. He also earned Second Team All-NSIC honors as a junior in 2017.
26 – Lewis isn't the only offensive weapon being honored on Saturday. Pass and Hartman have put together impressive resumes during their four-year careers with St. Cloud State, accounting for 26 of the 40 touchdowns this senior class has scored from 2015 to 2018. Pass has been one of the top targets for two different quarterbacks during his career, current QB Dwayne Lawhorn (Germantown, Wis. / Germantown) and former Husky Nate Meyer, as he's tallied 20 touchdowns and 1784 receiving yards in his time. Hartman has been no slouch either. As a tight end, the senior from Iowa has recorded six touchdowns, 534 receiving yards and earned Second Team All-NSIC honors as a junior in 2017.
21 – It's no secret that the St. Cloud State defense is one of the top in the nation. The Huskies currently have the No. 21 rush defense in all of Division II and rank third in the conference behind Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State. Horter, Schley and Manuel are a big part of that success, as they rank top-5 on the team in almost every defensive category this season. Horter leads the team in total tackles (51) and interceptions (2) after eight games, while Schley leads the team in tackles for loss (7.5 – 36) and sacks (4) this year. Manuel is not far behind his two senior counterparts, as he ranked third on the team in total tackles (43) as the team's starting safety/cornerback.
