ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team (2-2-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) defeated the RIT Tigers (1-2-1, 0-0-0 CHA) in a thrilling 3-2 overtime win on Saturday, October 6 to complete their weekend sweep.
Not quite the eight-goal first period the two teams had the night before, Saturday was a back-and-forth battle all 60 minutes. RIT's Kendall Cornine began the scoring at 9:55 of the first period, which would carry them to a 1-0 lead over the Huskies into the second.
St. Cloud's Hallie Theodosopoulos tied things up 16 minutes into the second period. Her goal was assisted by Jenniina Nylund and Julia Tylke. RIT would not let the Huskies go for long though, minutes later Cornine snuck one past SCSU goaltender Janine Alder on a Tigers power play taking the 2-1 lead.
The Huskies dominated in the third period, putting 23 shots on net, more than the first and second period combined. Theodosopoulos would again be the player to tie it for SCSU. At 13:05 of the third period she played off of a fantastic tic-tac-toe setup in front of the net by Tylke and Nylund, poking the puck past the Tigers netminder.
Regulation time would not be enough to decide this game; St. Cloud and RIT headed to overtime. The Tiger's Ellie Larson got caught on a holding penalty at 1:26 into OT providing SCSU with the man advantage, giving the Huskies just enough leverage to get it done. Junior defenseman Abby Thiessen was the overtime hero for the Huskies. She let one rip from the blue line at 2:38 of the OT period and put the puck to the back of the net through heavy traffic in front. Huskies win 3-2, sweeping RIT in the team's first ever matchup.
"We wanted to get two wins this weekend and we talked about it during the week," said Huskies' head coach Eric Rud. "As a coach you don't really talk about the results, you talk about the process, but this week we put a little emphasis on finding a way to get two wins."
St. Cloud's Alder had 23 saves in the game. RIT's goaltender Terra Lanteigne had 44 saves. Final shots on goal were SCSU 47, RIT 25. St. Cloud went 1-3 on power plays; RIT had one goal in three power play attempts.
Coach Rud said after the game, "As a team I thought our structure was good; our ability to manage the puck and make smart plays tonight was outstanding. To come up with 10 [goals] on a weekend is exactly what we want going into WCHA play."
SCSU will play their first WCHA conference game next weekend (Oct. 12/13) in a home-and-home series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. For complete ticket information regarding any SCSU home games in 2018-19, please visit www.scsutickets.com or call 1-877-SCSUTIX.
