SCSU scores late in third to force OT - not enough to beat Minnesota
ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University Huskies (4-10-1, 2-7-0 WCHA), despite a fantastic effort, lost 3-4 in overtime to the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (10-2-1, 8-2-1 WCHA). The Huskies led through the beginning of the third period then gave up two to Minnesota within minutes; SCSU tied the game with a minute and 22 seconds left, forcing the matchup to overtime.
"Tonight was a good, energetic effort," said Huskies' head coach Eric Rud. "We had a great week of practice and that carried over into the game. We're very happy with the game we played tonight, just wanted a different outcome."
Minnesota took the early lead in the first period on an unassisted, short-handed goal. Kelly Pannek made that for the Gophers at 2:32 of the period.
St. Cloud's Brooke Kudirka tied the game for the Huskies in the second; the teams would head into the third period even 1-1. It was Kudirka's first goal of the season.
Freshman Jenniina Nylund scored her fourth goal of the year, assisted by defenseman Taylor Wemple, almost two minutes into the third period. Nylund gave the Huskies the 2-1 lead for just about 10 minutes of play.
Minnesota came back hot then to score two goals in less than four minutes, putting them ahead 3-2 with three quarters of the final period gone. Gopher goals came from Abigail Boreen and Sarah Potomak.
Hannah Potrykus then scored off of a thrilling scramble in front of Minnesota's net. Potrykus, assisted by Nylund and Abby Thiessen, scored at 18:38 of the third period with the SCSU goalie pulled for the extra attacker. It was Potrykus's seventh goal of the season. Her goal tied the game 3-3 and forced the game into overtime.
"We did a good job keeping it in the zone [after the extra attacker came on], I happened to be right there and knocked it in [from Nylund]," said Potrykus. "It brought a lot of momentum and energy to the bench to get that tying goal late."
Two minutes and 57 seconds into overtime, St. Cloud saw their chances at beating the Gophers come to a halting stop. Minnesota's Taylor Heise scored her fourth goal of the season, unassisted. Of note, St. Cloud has not beaten the Gophers in regulation since Feb. 13, 2010 when SCSU took down Minnesota 6-3 in St. Cloud, that's 44 unbeaten games for UM against SCSU.
St. Cloud State goaltender Emma Polusny stopped 43 shots in the game; Minnesota's Alex Gulstene had 15 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 18, UM 47. St. Cloud went 0-2 on the power play and 1-0 on the penalty kill.
"All you can ever ask for out of your goaltender is to give you a chance to win; [Polusny] was great right from the get-go," said Rud. "You could tell she was on her game and she gave us a good effort."
The St. Cloud State Huskies will travel to Minneapolis tomorrow to face the Gophers at Ridder Arena at 2:07 p.m. Follow tomorrow's game:
