Football resumes action at Minot State

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University football team hit a bit of a speed bump in its final regular season home game of the 2018 season. Last weekend, St. Cloud State saw its three-game win streak come to an end, as a fourth quarter rally was not enough in a 37-24 loss to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Bemidji State University.  The Huskies look to get back on the winning tack as they take on Minot State at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Minot, North Dakota.

St. Cloud State still has an opportunity to post its best record since the 2013 season, when it won 12 games and qualified for the NCAA tournament. If the Huskies get a win over the Beavers on Saturday, they will be guaranteed at least seven wins in 2018 and will only suffer four losses, marking the most wins and best winning percentage since that 2013 season.

Fans who cannot make the journey to Minot can tune in to live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast on 1390 Granite City. Updates will also be made to St. Cloud State football's Twitter account (@SCSUHuskiesFB) when time allows.

Here are the five things to know before this weekend's game:

3 – St. Cloud State is 3-1 in its last four road games with victories over Minnesota-Crookston (44-14), Northern State (19-14) and (RV) Sioux Falls (30-27). The Huskies lone loss came at the hands of No. 1 Minnesota State, as the Mavericks took the game by a final score of 45-10.

1 – On the flip side, Minot State has just one win at home this 2018 season and zero on the road. Overall, the Beavers are 1-8 with their lone win coming over the University of Mary by a final score of 41-28. The 41 points are the most Minot State has scored this season, as the Beavers have been more likely to give up 40+ points than to score that many themselves.

9 – The Huskies are 9-1-1 all-time against Minot State, which joined the NSIC and Division II 2011. However, the Beavers defeated St. Cloud State for the first time in program history last season despite somewhat lopsided numbers. The Huskies tallied 438 yards of offense compared to Minot State's 249, and the defense did not surrender a single offensive touchdown. However, the Beavers did tally three interceptions off then-sophomore quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn (Germantown, Wis. / Germantown), two of which were returned for touchdowns, en route to a 23-13 victory.

1/8 – In addition to its outstanding defense, St. Cloud State has two of the biggest offensive weapons in sophomore kicker Adam Stage (Appleton, Wis. / Kimberly) and junior wide receiver John Solberg (Cambridge, Minn. / Cambridge-Isanti). Both rank in the top-10 in their respective offensive categories, as Stage currently holds the highest success rate in the NSIC for field goals made (min. 10 attempts) this season and ranked No. 8 in the nation in field goals per game (1.33). Solberg ranks eighth in the conference in receiving yards per game with an average of 74.6 and ranks top-50 in the nation in that same category.

58 – Minot State kicker JoseLuis Moreno currently holds the longest-made field goal in the NSIC this season. The junior converted a 58-yard field goal attempt in the Beavers win over Mary in early September. That 58-yarder is the longest converted field goal in the NSIC this season and is the longest made field goal in the nation this season.
