Huskies Dig Deep to Pressure Badgers but Fall Short in Final Period

St. Cloud edged Wisconsin to a two-period tie, but unable to do any more
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (5-15-1, 2-12-0 WCHA) dug deep to challenge the #1 University of Wisconsin Badgers (19-1-0, 9-1-0 WCHA), but fell short on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Huskies pushed the Badgers to a 1-1 tie going into the third period, but a deadly turnover followed by empty-net goal, finished the game with a 3-1 Wisconsin win.
Wisconsin's Britta Curl, assisted by Abby Roque and Mekenzie Steffen, opened the game scoring at 5:59 of the first period. That goal was Curl's tenth of the season. SCSU's Janine Alder kept the Badgers at bay then, long enough for Huskies' Janna Haeg to tip in a flying puck in front of the UW net. Alder made 22 saves in the second period alone.
At 10:50 of the second period, Haeg from Abby Thiessen and Laura Kluge, tied the game 1-1 on a power play goal. That goal was Haeg's second of the season.
Wisconsin capitalized on a Huskies turnover at 13:12 of the third period. Then an Annie Pankowski empty net goal with 53 seconds remaining in the matchup put the game out of reach from St. Cloud State.
St. Cloud State goaltender Janine Alder stopped 46 shots in the game; the Badger's Kristen Campbell had 12 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 49, UW 13. St. Cloud went 1-2 on the power play and 0-1 on the penalty kill.
"[Alder] played great," said Huskies' Assistant Coach Jinelle Siergiej. "She was calm in net; the team really builds off of her confidence that she showed."
The women's hockey team goes on break now until after the holidays. They will resume play Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud against Lindenwood. Those games take place at 2:07 p.m. and 12:07 p.m. respectively.
"We're excited for the momentum that we have, and we hope we can come back [after break] with the same energy," said Siergiej.
