ST. CLOUD, MINN. – It's been quite the week for the St. Cloud State volleyball team. On Tuesday, the Huskies stunned their arch rival the University of Minnesota-Duluth in straight sets, sweeping the No. 6 team in the country 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-19). Over the weekend, St. Cloud State looks to keep the good times rolling as it travels to North Dakota for two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) matches against the University of Mary and Minot State University.
The Huskies will open the weekend with a 6 p.m. match against Mary Friday evening before taking on the Beavers at 12 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Both matches will be steamed on KVSC, and both matches will also be streamed on live stats and video for each respective school.
Here are the five things to know before the big road trip:
7/3 – Thanks to its win over Minnesota-Duluth tuesday, St. Cloud State is 7-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. It's the team's best start in head coach Chad Braeglemann's tenure and in the past 10 years.
23 – The Huskies did something on Tuesday they haven't done in 23 years: Beat the UMD Bulldogs. St. Cloud State had not beat Minnesota-Duluth since 1995, its longest active losing streak against a conference opponent. The victory was also the Huskies first over a top-10 opponent in 20 years, according to available records.
.455 – First year outside Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) hit .455 against the Bulldogs on Tuesday with a team-leading 17 kills and just two errors in 33 attempts. It's the seventh time this season the first year has tallied double-digit kills against a single opponent and the eighth time she's tallied a hitting percentage over .200 this season.
5 – The Huskies needed five sets to defeat the upstart Marauders last season. St. Cloud State won the match 3-2 (25-17, 24-26, 26-24, 25-14, 15-13) thanks to 14 kills from Abby Templin (Cold Springs, Minn. / RICORI) and a career-high 33 digs from Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul).
44 – Things went a little bit better for the Huskies in their match against Minot State. St. Cloud State held the Beavers to just 44 points as it earned the 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-16 sweep). Then junior Micah Nier (Hatley, Wis. / Wittenberg-Birnamwood) led the team with 12 kills in the match while Krenz once again led the defensive charge with 22 digs. Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy) tallied what was then a career-high 21 assists.
