MADISON, WI – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (8-18-2, 3-14-0 WCHA) fell 1-3 to the #1 University of Wisconsin Badgers (23-3-0, 13-3-0 WCHA) despite an early game lead at LaBahn Arena Saturday, Jan. 26.
The Huskies scored first in game two in Madison. Senior captain Hannah Potrykus got one past the Badger's netminder at 4:53 of the first period. Potrykus was assisted by Kayla Friesen and Rachel Herzog.
St. Cloud's lead did not last too long, as Wisconsin came back to score two goals by the end of the first, ending the period with a 2-1 lead. Badger goals came from Britta Curl and Abby Roque.
Despite three Badger power plays and a called-off Wisconsin goal, the second period was scoreless on both ends of the ice. SCSU had two shots on goal in the period, and the Huskies goaltender Janine Alder made 19 saves in 20 minutes.
Emily Clark of Wisconsin gave them a two-goal lead at 8:41 of the third period. That would be enough to finish the game with a final score of 1-3.
St. Cloud State's Alder stopped 50 shots in the game; the Badger's Kristen Campbell had 12 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 13, UW 53. St. Cloud went 0-1 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.
Alder's 50 saves marks her new season-high for the Huskies, surpassing her previous season record of 46 saves also against the Badgers on December 8. Her career-high saves in goal for SCSU was 59 shots at Wisconsin on Jan. 14, 2017 (Alder's freshman year).
The team returns home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center February 1 and 2 for a weekend series against Ohio State University.
