SCSU's Ryan Poehling earns honors at 2019 IIHF World Juniors

St. Cloud State University junior Ryan Poehling earned silver medals at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in British Columbia. Poehling was a prime player for Team USA at the IIHF tournament, which saw the Americans finish with a 5-2 record, dropping the gold medal game to Finland by a 3-2 tally on Jan. 5 in Vancouver, B.C.
Poehling, a junior, was voted Most Valuable Player in the IIHF tournament by the media, made the tourney All-Star Team and was voted Best Forward by the tournament directorate.
The Lakeville native led the U.S. team in scoring. His five goals and three assists were third-best at the tournament.
Team USA was led on the bench by coach Mike Hastings, who played college hockey at SCSU from 1986-88 and later served as an assistant coach for the SCSU men's hockey team under Craig Dahl from 1990 to 1992. Hastings is currently the head coach at Minnesota State, Mankato.Poehling and the #1 ranked Huskies will return to action at #5 Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 11-12. SCSU currently owns a 14-2-2 overall record and sit atop the NCHC standings with a 6-0-2 record. SCSU will return to home on Jan. 18-19 for a pair of games at the HBNHC against NCHC rival #14 Western Michigan.
