ST. CLOUD, MINN. – If you read the box score from the St. Cloud State University men's basketball home opener, you might have thought there was a typo. There wasn't. The Huskies won their home opener in resounding fashion, handily beating Oak Hills Christian Community College 126-48 for their first win of 2019-20.
St. Cloud State's 126 points as a team was not quite enough to break the school record, but it came close. According to available records, the Huskies put up 144 on Macalester College in 1990, but their 126 Tuesday night ranks second all-time behind that mark. St. Cloud State also shot .628 from the floor and .438 from three-point range, both of which rank top-5 all-time in single-game performances.
The Huskies scored early and often against the Wolfpack, as they scored eight unanswered points to open the game. In fact, St. Cloud State's smallest lead in the opening 20 minutes of play was eight points, as Oak Hills Christian managed to cut the lead to 20-12 at 12:54 thanks to a three-pointer by Ronnie Jackson.
However, the Huskies offensive prowess was too much for the Wolfpack to handle, as they took a 63-23 lead into the locker room at half. Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) led St. Cloud State scoring attack in the first half, scoring a season-high 15 points, while Andrija Blatancic (Bergen, Norway / Academy of Arts) added 10 points on three steals.
The Huskies continued to poor on the points in the second half and eventually eclipsed 100 points on a jumper by Oliver Ehrnvall (Uppsala, Sweden / Celsiusskolan) with 9:54 remaining on the clock. As the half progressed, St. Cloud State continued to extend its lead by 60 to 70 points and held a 124-45 advantage with 1:50 remaining in the game. Dan Geistler (Norwalk, Iowa / Norwalk) would score the Huskies final basket of the game with 36 seconds on the clock, cementing the 126-48 win for St. Cloud State.
Every Husky that saw the court scored Tuesday evening, with Tytyshnik leading the way with a season and St. Cloud State career-high 20 points on 7-9 shooting, including a 6-7 mark from three-point land. Blatancic added 16, while Diamond Onwuka (Barcelona, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy), Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington), Ethan Schuemer (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook), Jailen Moore (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union), Erhnvall and Tyler Marsh (Nelson, New Zealand / Waimea) all scored in double-digits for the Huskies.
Ehrnvall ended the game as the team's leading rebounder, pulling a career-high 16 in the victory. Onwuka tallied seven rebounds for the Huskies, while Schuemer ended his night with six.
With the victory, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 1-2, and the team still has an unblemished mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. The Huskies will return to action on Saturday as they face nationally ranked Minnesota State in a nonconference match up. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Mankato, Minnesota.
