#6/7 St. Cloud State Takes Two of Three From Minnesota State, Improves to 14-3

SCSU recorded their first series win of the NSIC season after splitting with MSU on Monday.
OMAHA, Neb. - The #6/7 St. Cloud State baseball team (14-3, 2-1 NSIC) picked up their first NSIC series victory of the season after splitting in a double-header with Minnesota State Mankato on Monday, March 18th. SCSU fell 5-10 in the first game before bouncing back for an 8-2 victory in game two.Â
GAME TWO | SCSU 5, MSU 10
Minnesota State used a trio of three-run home runs to hold a 9-0 lead against the Huskies through the first five innings of play in game two. However, the Huskies would respond with a five-run sixth inning to decrease their deficit to four in the seven-inning ballgame. The five-run inning was sparked by a two-run shot to right field by Najee Gaskins to put SCSU on the board, then Lenny Walker doubled home Matjew Meyer to make it a 9-3 game. Caeden Harris capped off the big inning with a 2 RBI single that scored Mallek and Walker. MSU's Cam Kline struck out 11 Huskies in his complete game effort. Sheldon Miks was the pitcher of record for SCSU, going 3 2/3 innings and striking out five before Riley Ahern provided 1 1/3 innings of relief work. Ahern struck out two and did not allow a run while scattering two hits. In relief of Ahern was Zach Siggelkow who recorded a strikeout, then Zach Walz closed out the sixth with 2/3 of an inning in relief.
GAME THREE | SCSU 8, MSU 2
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead over MSU after Lenny Walker doubled home Gaskins in the top of the first. MSU responded by posting a pair in the second to gain a 2-1 lead, but SCSU would punch back by scoring in the fourth and fifth innings to earn a 3-2 lead. A three-run seventh inning put SCSU up 6-2, then the Huskies capitalized on a pair of errors in the top of the ninth inning to extend their lead 8-2.Â
Blake Flint (2-0) gave the Huskies a sterling start in the series finale, striking out eight and only allowing two over his seven innings of work. Lenny Walker and Jordan Joseph each recorded five hits in the series and three RBI's in the finale.
Mitch Mallek finished the weekend 7-12 at the plate with two RBI's, two doubles, one triple, a walk and is now hitting .424 through the Huskies' first 17 games.Â
St. Cloud State will play their first NSIC mid-week series of the year on Wednesday, March 20th on the road against Winona State. Action is slated to begin at 1:30 PM CT with the second game to follow in Winona, Minn.
