Blake Flint picked up his first career victory for SCSU after posting seven scoreless innings.
TUCSON, Ariz. - The #11 St. Cloud State baseball team improved to 7-1 on the season after an 8-2 victory over Benedictine at Mesa (AZ) on Tuesday, March 5th at the Kino Sports Complex.
Arizona natives, Blake Flint, Najee Gaskins and Lenny Walker were key contributors in SCSU's second victory of the week in Tucson.
Flint delivered seven scoreless innings while striking out nine and only allowing three hits. Walker recorded the Huskies' first three RBI's of the game after going 2-5 with a pair of double. Gaskins scored a run and ripped a triple for SCSU as the starting center fielder in the lead-off spot.
The Huskies gained a 2-0 lead in the third after a 2 RBI double from Lenny Walker, before building on their lead with another RBI double from Walker in the fifth. SCSU scratched across one in the seventh to lead 4-0, but a three-run eighth inning would give the Huskies the insurance runs they needed to control the momentum for the duration of the contest. Dylan Haskamp charted his first collegiate hit, a RBI single that scored Erik Hollomon to give SCSU an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. SCSU would allow two in the bottom frame to win by an 8-2 margin.
Relieving Flint in the eighth was Riley Ahern, posting a scoreless frame and striking out one while not allowing a runner to reach base. Zach Iten would make his first appearance of the season in the ninth and slam the door for the Huskies.
St. Cloud State out-hit the Redhawks 13-6 while stranding 11 baserunners throughout the game, compared to Benedictine's six. The Huskies will play NSIC opponent, Concordia-St. Paul at 4 PM MST on March 6th. SCSU's game against the Golden Bears will not count as a conference game, but will count toward their NCAA Central Region record.
