The Huskies' eight game win streak was snapped by the Vikings
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The #4 St. Cloud State baseball team (21-5, 9-3 NSIC) was defeated in consecutive games for the first time this season after dropping a pair of extra-inning thrillers against defending NCAA DII national champion, Augustana University (18-7, 11-1 NSIC).
The Vikings snapped SCSU's eight game winning streak with a 4-3 game one victory in 11 innings, then swept the Huskies with a 5-3 finish in game two. Monday marked the first time SCSU has lost back-to-back games in 2019.
GAME ONE, #4 SCSU 3 | AUGIE 4 (11 Innings)
Augustana struck first with three consecutive one-run innings, and totaling 11 hits over those three innings. Shannon Ahern provided four scoreless frames to keep the Huskies in the ballgame, then SCSU responded with one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to tie the ballgame at three. Ahern struck out four and only allowed three runners to reach base. Blake Flint provided three scoreless innings and three strikeouts before allowing the eventual game-winning run in the 11th frame.Â
St. Cloud State threatened late in the ninth, loading the bases and working the count to full before the Vikings would escape the inning.Â
GAME TWO, #4 SCSU 3 | AUGIE 5 (9 Innings)
In an originally scheduled seven-inning contest, the Huskies were able to gain a 1-0 advantage courtesy of a single from Najee Gaskins that scored Mathew Meyer. Augie answered with one run in the fourth, before SCSU took back the lead with a pair in their half of the fourth. Ethan Ibarra drew a bases loaded walk to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead, then Lenny Walker drove in Caeden Harris to extend the Huskies' lead 3-1. Augustana responded with one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at three.
Sheldon Miks held the Vikings to three runs on ten hits while striking out four over six innings of work. Matt Butler suffered his first loss of the season after the Vikings scratched across two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 lead.Â
