St. Cloud State University women's hockey coach Eric Rud announced his resignation and will now serve as an assistant coach for the men's hockey program at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Heather Weems said that the national search for a new head coach to replace Rud will begin immediately.
"I want to thank Eric Rud for his leadership and commitment to our women's hockey program and athletic department during his tenure on campus," Weems said. "We wish him the best in his new position at Miami."
The fourth coach in the history of the women's hockey program at St. Cloud State, Rud finished his fifth season with the Huskies in 2018-19.  Rud coached several All-WCHA award winners during his career at SCSU, including goaltenders Janine Alder and Emma Polusny. Alder has played in two Winter Olympic games for Team Switzerland, while both Alder and Polusny recently played at the 2019 IIHF World Women's Championships for Team Switzerland and Team USA respectively.
Â
The move to Miami will mark a return to the men's game for Rud, who previously served as an assistant men's hockey coach at Colorado College from 2011 to 2014 and was the head coach and general manager with the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers in 2010-11. From 2005 to 2010, Rud was an assistant men's hockey coach for the Huskies under Bob Motzko.
Â
A graduate of Colorado College, Rud was a two-time team captain and two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Year for the Tigers during his collegiate playing career.  He went on to play professional hockey from 1997 to 2002, and served as a player assistant coach with the Florida Everblades in 1999-2000 and with the Idaho Steelheads from 2000 to 2002.
Â
He joined the coaching ranks as an assistant with the USHL's Cedar Rapids Roughriders from 2002 to 2004 and was an assistant coach at Colorado College in 2004-05.
The St. Cloud State University women's hockey program's first year of competition was 1998-99 and the Huskies joined the Western Collegiate Hockey Association at the start of the 1999-00 season.
