Game notes
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – It's here! Homecoming is finally here!
For the second year, St. Cloud State University is celebrating Homecoming, and what better way to cap it off than with some football action? After a heartbreaking loss to Minnesota-Duluth last weekend, the Huskies will look to rebound this Homecoming weekend as they host Northern State University at 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 28.
There will be plenty of festivities leading up to the game, which again should prove to be exciting. St. Cloud State enters the weekend with a 2-1 record and received votes in the recent American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll this past week. Northern State has struggled to start the season but is vastly improved from a team that went 4-7 in 2018.
Live stats, video and a radio broadcast will be available for Saturday evening's game, while score updates can be found on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUHuskiesFB).
Here are the five things to know before Saturday's 5 p.m. kickoff:
2010 – After an eight-year hiatus, Homecoming returned to St. Cloud State in 2018 and featured one of the best games of the season for the Huskies, as they defeated Upper Iowa 34-14. In the game, St. Cloud State gained 448 yards of total offense, as Dwayne Lawhorn (Germantown, Wis. / Germantown) threw for 269 yards, with four touchdowns and 15 completions in the game. He connected with John Solberg (Cambridge, Minn. / Cambridge-Isanti) on three of his four touchdowns, as Solberg finished the game with 102 receiving yards on six receptions.
3:32 – The Huskies enter the game with a 2-1 record after suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of Minnesota-Duluth last week. St. Cloud State held its own with the #13 ranked team in the nation, as the defense held the Bulldogs to zero points in the first quarter and only trailed 10-0 at the half. The Huskies were able to make up the deficit in the second, as they cut the lead to 20-14 thanks to a Tanner Teige (Big Lake, Minn. / Big Lake) touchdown with 3:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. Alas, Minnesota-Duluth managed to run out the clock to win the game 20-14.
2nd – Despite the loss, St. Cloud State still ranks towards the top of the NSIC in multiple defensive categories. As a team, the Huskies rank second in scoring defense (10.7 points/game allowed) and total sacks, having accumulated 12 sacks through the first 12 games of the season. Payton Conrad (Tea, S.D. / Tea) also recorded the team's first interception of the season, thanks to a 25 yarder against the Bulldogs this past weekend.
33 – St. Cloud State and Northern State scored a combined 33 points in last season's match up, with the Huskies coming out on top 19-14. In fact, St. Cloud State trailed the Wolves 14-13 late in the fourth quarter, until sophomore quarterback Justin Czech (Chippewa Falls, Wis. / Chippewa Falls) led the Huskies to victory with an impressive drive late in the quarter. St. Cloud State's defense then held Northern State at bay on its final offensive possession, as it forced two incomplete passes and a tackle for loss to secure the win for the Huskies.
1-2 – The Wolves finished the season with a 4-7 record in 2018 and are off to a 1-2 start this season. Northern State's lone win this season has come on the road, as the Wolves went into Minot and beat Minot State 14-10 on September 14. Offensively, Northern State continues to score more points each week, as the team lost 24-17 to MSU-Moorhead last week after falling to Bemidji State 33-7 in its season opener.
