St. Cloud State (1-3-0, 1-3-0 WCHA) goaltender Emma Polusny recorded 50 saves in her first start of the season, but the Huskies fell 5-1 at the hands of No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth (4-2-0, 4-2-0 WCHA) in Saturday's series finale. A four-goal Bulldog second period doomed SCSU in the loss.
Polusny stopped 17 shots in a scoreless first period, while the Huskies' special teams killed off a pair of UMD power plays. Gabbie Hughes of Minnesota-Duluth opened the scoring at the 5:12 mark of the second period, followed by a flurry of three goals netted by Anna Klein, Naomi Rogge and Clara Van Wieren at the 7:44, 8:27 and 9:17 marks.
The Huskies put themselves on the board with a touch under four minutes to go in the third period as Klara Hymlarova found an open Jenniina Nylund at the right circle. Nylund took a step forward and fired a wrister top shelf past the right shoulder of the Bulldogs goaltender, earning her first goal of the 2020-21 campaign. Minnesota-Duluth added a fifth and final goal courtesy of Van Wieren a little under three to play in the game.
SCSU was outshot 55-21 in the game. Nylund led the Huskies with five shots on goal, while Olivia Hanson and Hannah Bates each tallied three blocks. The Huskies' penalty kill denied all four of Minnesota-Duluth's power play chances, finishing the series going six-for-six on the kill.
St. Cloud State returns to action this Thursday, December 10 for a two-game road series at Bemidji State. Thursday's game will be at 6:07 p.m. CST with a 3:07 p.m. CST start time Friday.
