ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The award season is just beginning for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team. On the eve of the final weekend of the regular season, one Husky already needs to add to her trophy case, as junior guard Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) was named to the 2019-20 Second Team Academic All-District by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday morning.
Wortz has been stellar for St. Cloud State both on the court and in the classroom, maintaining a 3.92 grade point average (GPA) while leading the Huskies to their best Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) record since joining the league in 2008. As the team's leading scorer, Wortz is averaging an impressive 13.1 points per game while shooting roughly .400 from both the floor and three-point range. More impressively, Wortz is averaging 13.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game against conference opponents while shooting .412 from the floor and a team-leading .435 clip from beyond the arc.
It's not just on the court where Wortz has impressive. The junior biomedical sciences major, she is the first women's basketball student-athlete to earn Academic All-District honors from CoSIDA in 20 years, as Jennifer Higgins was the last Husky to receive the honor back in 2000. Wortz also received Academic All-Conference honors after her sophomore season in 2018-19 and was named Second Team All-Conference that same season.
The 2019-20 CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team is selected by members of CoSIDA and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their efforts both on the court and in the classroom. All first team honors are automatic finalist for Academic All-America honors, which recognizes a select number of student-athletes across all three NCAA Divisions plus the NAIA. Academic All-America honorees will be announced mid-March.
