2/24/2020 2:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The 2019-20 season is not yet over for the St. Cloud State University men's basketball team. After a strong regular and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season, the Huskies are headed to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the opening round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, as they are set to face Augustana University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26.
This is the first time since 2015-16 St. Cloud State will open the conference tournament on the road, as the Huskies have opened the playoffs at home the past two seasons. After earning a huge win over Minnesota-Crookston last Saturday, St. Cloud State clinched the No. 5 seed in the NSIC North Division, meaning the team has the honor of traveling to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to face the South No. 4 seed Augustana in the opening round of the tournament. The Vikings earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament after finishing the regular season with an overall record of 18-10 and a 13-9 mark in NSIC play.
Fans can follow the Huskies in a variety of ways, including live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast featuring JW Cox. Score updates will also be made on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUmensbball) during the game.
Here are the five things to know before Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. tipoff:
22 – It's been less than a month since St. Cloud State last faced Augustana during the regular season. In fact, the two team's squared off on Saturday, February 8 in Halenbeck Hall, as the Vikings handed the Huskies a 81-58 loss behind a 26 point scoring performance by Dylan LeBrun. This week, St. Cloud State is looking to turn the tides against Augustana on its own home court, a place the Huskies haven't won since the 2017-18 season.
3 – St. Cloud State has consistently been a top contender in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, as the team has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament for three consecutive years. The Huskies also have some unfinished business entering the tournament this year after getting bounced early in 2018-19. Despite a resounding first round win over Upper Iowa, St. Cloud State came up short in its quarterfinal game against Wayne State, falling by a final score of 77-76.
31/17/10 – The Huskies needed a big win over the Golden Eagles to secure the No. 5 seed in the South and avoid facing either Minnesota State or Winona State in the opening round of the tournament. That big win came courtesy of St. Cloud State's seniors, as three of them scored in double-digits to lead the Huskies to their 89-77 road victory. Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) led the way as he has all season, scoring 31 points and adding nine assists and nine rebounds in the final regular season game of his career. Oliver Ehrnvall (Uppsala, Sweden / Manhattan) and Jake Mussman also had big days on the court, as Ehrnvall finished with a career-high 17 points in the win while Mussman added 10 of his own
6 – First year guard Tyler Marsh (Nelson, New Zealand / Waimea) has seen increased playing time this past month, as he's played in six straight games since February 7. Marsh played the most minutes of his career in the Huskies loss to Bemidji State last Friday, as he played 22 minutes for St. Cloud State, scoring three points and pulling in three rebounds.
605/21.6 – Regardless of what happens Wednesday, Marshall will graduate as one of the most successful seniors in Huskies basketball history. In his fourth and final year with St. Cloud State basketball, Marshall scored 605 points and averaged 21.6 points per game, which ranks second all-time behind Gage Davis' performance in 2018-19. Entering his senior season, Marshall averaged under 10.0 points per game and never scored over 200 points in a season.
