The Minnesota Whitecaps announced the re-signing of former St. Cloud State forward Meaghan Pezon on Tuesday. A member of the organization dating back to the 2010-11 campaign, Pezon won the 2019 Isobel Cup Championship with the Whitecaps during their inaugural season in the National Women's Hockey League. Pezon accounted for 21 points in 24 games throughout the 2019-20 season, tallying eight goals and 13 assists with a plus-18 while leading Minnesota to a 17-5 finish.
"I cannot wait to see what this season has to offer, and I'm honored to be a part of this growing league," Pezon told NWHL media. "NWHL fans are the best in the business, and I can't wait to play again for the best of the best – the Whitecaps fans who have supported us along the way! I am so excited for the opportunity to be a Whitecap again."
Pezon played four years of collegiate hockey at St. Cloud State from 2006-07 to 2009-10. The forward piled up 23 points in her freshman and sophomore seasons, scoring 12 and 13 goals respectively. As a senior, Pezon lead the Huskies to a winning record while finding the back of the net 12 times and tallying 26 assists for a 38-point campaign, tied for the ninth-most prolific scoring season in a SCSU uniform. Pezon's 95 career points (41-54) ranks sixth-most all-time in program history.
"We are proud of Meaghan and all that she has accomplished in her career." said St. Cloud State head coach Steve Macdonald. "She is another shining example for young girls and women who dream of playing professional hockey. We are eager to see what is in store for Meaghan as a Whitecap!"
The Minnesota Whitecaps began play in the National Women's Hockey League in 2019 and promptly won the Isobel Cup Championship. In 2019-20, the Whitecaps had again advanced to the Cup Final before the COVID-19 pandemic led to the championship game being canceled. Following the disbanding of the Western Women's Hockey League in 2011, Minnesota had operated as an independent professional team for the ensuing seven seasons. Pezon has been a member of two championship teams, first in 2011 (WWHL) and again in 2019.
Prior to her collegiate career, Pezon created a storied legacy at Eden Prairie High School. Pezon followed up a junior season that saw her net 46 goals and 40 assists in just 28 games with a dominant senior season, leading Eden Prairie to a 31-0 record and a Minnesota State High School League Class AA Championship. She capped off her prep career by being named a 2006 Minnesota Ms. Hockey Finalist.
Pezon spent two seasons at St. Catherine University as an assistant Women's Hockey coach in 2016-17 and 2017-18, working primarily with forwards and the power play units.
Established in 2015, the NWHL was the first professional women's hockey league in North America to pay its players. The mission of the league is to fuel the continued growth of the sport and brand of pro women's hockey. The league is made up of the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and the Toronto Six.
