BISMARCK, N.D. - It was a sweep trip to North Dakota for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team. The Huskies earned their first series sweep of the 2020-21 season thanks to a 67-55 win over the University of Mary Saturday afternoon.
St. Cloud State once again used strong defensive play to hold Mary at bay, as the team held its opponent to under 60 points for the second consecutive game. It was still a nailbiter, though, as the Marauders were equally as stingy defensively, holding the Huskies to .364 shooting in the game. Still, St. Cloud State was able to overcome its early shooting woes early in the second quarter, as the team held a 27-19 advantage at the half.
Mary made things interesting in the third quarter, as the Marauders outscored the Huskies 22-15 to cut the lead to 42-41 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. St. Cloud State clung to that one point lead and never let it go. Though Mary tied the game at 42-42, the home team was never able to take a lead of its own, as the Huskies used free throws and timely shooting down the stretch to clinch the 67-55 victory.
St. Coud State packed the stat sheet, as three different Huskies scored in double-digits Saturday afternoon. One of those was senior Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) who led the team with 21 points and added four rebounds, two assists and four steals in the victory. Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) continued her impressive start to the season, as she scored 18 points, 12 on free throws, and added a team-leading five assists and five steals. A day after leading the team in points, Katrina Theis (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) concluded her impressive week with 11 points, while Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany) continued to rake in the rebound, pulling in eight.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 4-2 and the team remains 1-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division play. The Huskies will officially resume conference play next weekend when they travel to Aberdeen, South Dakota to face Northern State Friday and Saturday.
