ABERDEEN, S.D. - The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team is very good at defense.
Very very good at defense.
The Huskies defense was the star of the show in Friday evening's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division game at Northern State University, leading St. Cloud State to a 69-40 wi in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Saying the Huskies defense stole the show Friday evening is truly not an exaggeration. St. Cloud State's defense allowed the Wolves to score just 40 points in the entire game and held Northern State to a .255 field goal percentage, including a .167 percentage from beyond the arc for the entire game. Additionally, the Huskies as a team tallied 11 total steals and six blocks, making it their best overall team defensive performance of the 2020-21 season.
Things were tightly contested after the first quarter, as St. Cloud State held a slim 14-12 advantage over Northern State before going on an impressive second quarter run to hold a 35-23 lead entering halftime. From there, the Huskies defense held the Wolves to just five third quarter points and 12 points in the fourth to clinch a nice 69-40 road win.
Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) continued to tear up the conference, as she led the game with 16 points with three rebounds, three assists, a block and three steals. Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) was right behind her in nearly every statistical category, as she tallied 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and a team-leading four steals.
Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) was a defensive catalyst for St. Cloud State, as she led the team with nine rebounds and three blocks while scoring 10 points from the floor.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 5-2 on the year and are 4-1 in NSIC North Division play. St. Cloud State will close its road trip on Saturday when it faces the same Northern State team at 4 p.m. in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
