COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - St. Cloud State University men's hockey forward Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland / Kiekko-Espoo) spent the month of January establishing himself as one of the top forwards, not only on the Huskies stacked offense, but also in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). His performances did not go unnoticed, as he was named the NCHC January Rookie of the Month, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Miettinen's numbers in January were nothing short of staggering, as he led all NCHC rookies in goals, assists and points by a significant margin. In eight games, the freshman Fin tallied a conference-leading 10 points with five goals and five assists during the month of January. Perhaps more impressive: Miettinen scored three powerplay goals during the month and recorded five points on the power play.
Entering the opening weekend in February, Miettinen leads the Huskies in goals (9), points (18) and powerplay goals (5) and is one of the top ranking forwards in the NCHC. He currently leads the NCHC in power play goals (5) and ranks third amongst all skaters in goals (9). Miettinen additionally ranks fourth in points (18) and leads all freshmen in scoring thanks to his 9-9-18 stat line.
This is the second time Miettinen made headlines this week, as he, along with teammate Nick Perbix (Elk River, Minn. / Omaha) were named nominees for the Hobey Baker Award late Monday afternoon. Fans can participate in the Hobey Baker Fan Vote until March 8, when the top-10 finalists will be named. St. Cloud State will return to action on Friday, February 5 when it hosts Western Michigan University at 7:37 p.m. in the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
