BEMIDJI, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team has always enjoyed playing the role of the villain. The team who crushes the hopes and dreams of others who look for historic or undefeated seasons.
Well, the Huskies played the role again Friday evening, this time putting a stop to Bemidji State University's Cinderella-esc season. The Beavers were the best team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) entering Friday's contest, as they were undefeated in NSIC North Division Play. Well, Bemidji State is undefeated no more thanks to St. Cloud State, as the Huskies dealt the Beavers a 65-42 loss.
St. Cloud State was completely dominant from start to finish, as the team outscored Bemidji State in every quarter played Friday evening. The Huskies biggest offensive explosion came in the first quarter, which they closed with an impressive 29-13 lead. That was, in fact, the most points either team would score in a single quarter, as St. Cloud State held Bemidji State to just 29 points in the ensuing three quarters. In turn, the Beavers held the Huskies to 36 points in the second through fourth quarters, but that first quarter explosion was enough to clinch the 65-42 victory.
Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) went off for St. Cloud State, as she scored a career-high 28 points in 30 minutes on 11-19 shooting, including a 4-8 mark from beyond the arc. First year Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn. / Sauk Centre) also had a career night for the Huskies, as she pulled in a career-high and team-leading nine rebounds, seven of which were defensive.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 6-3 and the team is 5-2 NSIC North Division play. The Huskies return to action Saturday afternoon, when they face the same Beaver team at 3:30 p.m. in Bemidji, Minnesota.
