BURNSVILLE, MINN. - It was quite the weekend for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team and fifth year senior Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson). The Huskies upended the top two teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) South Division Friday and Saturday, improving to 11-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play. For her performances, Wortz was named the NSIC North Division Player of the Week, becoming the second St. Cloud State student-athlete to earn the honor this season.Â
Wortz joins Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) as the two Huskies named NSIC North Division Player of the Week this season and does so after putting up big numbers for St. Cloud State. The guard averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game in the Huskies wins over Concordia-St. Paul and (RV) Minnesota State. Wortz' shooting numbers are equally as staggering, as she shot .552 (16-29) from the floor, including a 6-14 (.429) clip from three-point range, while helping St. Cloud State hold the top two offenses in the NSIC to an average of 60.9 points per game.Â
Wortz had a hot hand in the Huskies 73-69 comeback win over Concordia-St. Paul, as she tallied 18 points on 7-13 shooting for St. Cloud State. She also made the go-ahead free throw with 1:39 left in regulation and the game-clinching free throws in the final second. The fifth year senior was even better on Saturday. Wortz scored a season-high 25 points in St. Cloud State's 66-52 win over Minnesota State, shooting 9-16 from the floor and 5-10 from beyond the arc. She was equally clutch against the Mavericks as she was against the Golden Bears. Wortz hit the game-tying three-point in the final minute of the third quarter and gave the Huskies a lead they would never relinquish 43 seconds later.Â
Wortz and the rest of St. Cloud State will be back in action Friday, when the Huskies take on Upper Iowa at 7:30 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa.
