Trio of freshmen step up in first collegiate game to help Huskies to victory in season opener at the Central Region Challenge
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (1-0, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) opened its 2023-24 season in style with an exciting 80-73 victory over Pittsburg State (0-1, 0-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) on Friday Afternoon at the historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
The young Huskies team was led by a trio of freshmen – Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia), Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) and Vance Peiffer (Waukee, Iowa) who made a tremendous impact in their first collegiate game. After a solid first half, Morgan had a monstrous second half, erupting for 17 points on 6-8 shooting in just 11 minutes. He finished the game with 25 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Ramlall was the team's second leading scorer with 15 points and Peiffer contributed eight points and a team-leading ten rebounds.
The first half was back-and-forth, and the Huskies took a 32-29 lead into the break. In the second half the Huskies never trailed and held a lead as big as 15 points with 8:39 remaining in the game, but Pitt State was resilient and cut the deficit to just three with 1:33 left on the clock. Senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) hit a three-pointer with 22 ticks remaining to pit the Huskies up 6 and all-but ice the game. Pitt State missed its next shot and SCSU closed the game making three of its last four free throws to close the game.
TOP HUSKIES
QUOTEABLES – St. Cloud State head coach Quincy Henderson
"It was a resilient effort by the group. They weathered some late game pushes by Pitt and executed down the stretch. We had some great production off the bench. It'll be a quick turnaround for Henderson State tomorrow. That same effort will have to be there."
NOTABLES

The Huskies play their second and final game of the weekend in the Central Region Challenge at the historical Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. against Henderson State (Ark.) tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. CT.
