St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Prepares for First Conference Road Trip

Huskies travel to play Northern State Friday, MSU Moorhead Saturday
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (5-1 overall, 2-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) makes its first conference road trip of the 2023-24 season this weekend. On Friday, the Huskies travel to play Northern State (6-2 overall, 2-0 NSIC) and on Saturday, the Huskies play MSU Moorhead (0-7 overall, 0-2 NSIC). Friday's game tips off at 7:30 p.m. CT at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. and Saturday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. CT in Moorhead at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, SCSU opened its conference schedule, hosting Minnesota Crookston and Minot State. Friday against Minnesota Crookston, St. Cloud State went back and forth with the Eagles to start the game and halfway through the first quarter were down three-points. The Huskies rallied with an 11-2 run to close out the quarter and never look back. Crookston cut what was once an eight-point lead to four points halfway through the second quarter, but the Huskies rallied again with a 15-7 run of their own, heading into halftime with a 12-point lead. St. Cloud State comfortably led by double-digits the rest of the game on their way to a commanding 72-51 victory.
A balanced scoring output for St. Cloud led to four Huskies scoring in double figures including senior forward Jasmine Litt (Pulaski, Wis.). In her third consecutive start, Litt recorded her third straight game scoring 10 or more points, tallying 13 points, eight rebounds, two made threes, two steals, and two blocks. Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Philips, Wis.) contributed her eighth consecutive game in double-digits, scoring 12 points. She also grabbed four rebounds and snatched two steals. Senior guard Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.) stuffed the stat sheet for the Huskies pouring in six points, dishing out a game and career-high six assists, grabbing a career-high seven rebounds, with two steals.
Saturday's game against Minot State garnered similar results for the Huskies as they cruised to a 72-54 victory for their second conference win. The Huskies opened the first quarter bombarding the Beavers from deep as they knocked in three of their four three-point attempts. Senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) cashed in two of those threes on her way to a nine-point, four assist, four steal, and three rebound afternoon. Litt made a buzzer beating layup to give the Huskies a 23-17 lead heading into the second quarter. MISU responded with a 12-6 run early in the quarter to tie the game at 29. The Huskies found themselves only up two-points heading into halftime as Minot State made a buzzer beating layup of their own to cut into that deficit. Coming out of halftime, SCSU turned up the defense, holding Minot to 26% from the field in the second half after shooting 66% in the first half. The Huskies started to break the game open as Eggebrecht scored 10 of her 19 points in the third quarter on 3-of-4 shooting with two made threes. Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) scored the final four points in the third quarter for the Huskies and blocked a potential buzzer beating layup to end the period. St. Cloud retained its momentum in the fourth, outscoring the Beavers 19-7 on its way to a 21-point victory. Sawicki once again controlled the paint as she registered her first double-double of her career, scoring 15 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and blocking three shots. Sawicki has now blocked multiple shots in four consecutive games.

St. Cloud travels to Northern State on Friday where they have a 15-16 record against the Wolves. The Huskies took the first of two games against Northern State last year, winning 74-53. Jada Eggebrecht led all scorers in the game with 13 points and cashed three three-pointers. Dru Henning and Ashley Sawicki weren't far behind Eggebrecht as they each recorded 12 points. Henning drained a career-high four three pointers and grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists. Sawicki shot an efficient 6/9 while snatching six rebounds, recording four assists, and denying two shot attempts. The stifling SCSU defense held the Wolves to 32.7% from the field on its way to a 21-point victory. The Huskies did not have the same result in the second game as they fell 59-50. The game went back and forth, and no team led by more than six points. Eggebrecht knocked down two three-pointers in the final 96 seconds to keep the Huskies within striking distance, but the Wolves made all seven of their free throw attempts in the final 35 seconds to ice the game for Northern State. Eggebrecht finished with a team high 17 points and drained a career high five three-pointers.
The Huskies hold a 36-29 advantage against MSU Moorhead in their 65 meetings all-time. St. Cloud took the first game last year, slaying the Dragons 80-62. The Huskies found themselves in a seven-point halftime hole after they were outscored 19-9 in the second quarter. St. Cloud flipped the game around in the third quarter outscoring, MSUM 20-7 to take a six-point lead heading into the fourth. The defense of the Huskies was relentless as they held the Dragons to just 20% from the field. St. Cloud broke the game open with a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter giving them a 14-point lead. The Huskies controlled the rest of the game on their way to an 18-point victory. Eggebrecht scored 18-points on an efficient 9-of-16 shooting. Jasmine Litt scored 13-points in 13 minutes off the bench. The second game saw the Huskies fall in a tightly contested game. St. Cloud found themselves down nine points going into halftime after MSU Moorhead closed the half on a 10-2 run. The Huskies stayed within striking distance as Henning tied the game at 35 halfway through the third quarter, but another late run by MSU Moorhead gave the Dragons a 46-39 lead headed into the fourth quarter. The game continued to go back and forth in the final frame and the Huskies came to within one point on multiple occasions. Sawicki made a layup with 99 seconds left in the game to bring the Huskies within one, but St. Cloud did not score the rest of the game, falling 55-50. Sawicki led the Huskies with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Eggebrecht scored 11 points and dished out a game-high five assists.
SCOUTING NORTHERN STATE
Northern State comes into this matchup with a 6-2 record. The Wolves had a five-game win streak snapped by UW-Parkside, before getting back on their feet and getting back in the win column with a 60-44 victory over MSU Moorhead. Sophomore center Madelyn Bragg leads the Wolves offensive attack with averages of 20 points per game, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks on 61.8% from the field. Bragg has scpred 20 or more points in give of NSU's eight games this season. Bragg was named to the NSIC Shining 5 team last week after she averaged 25 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in Northern State's two games. Senior guard Rianna Fillipi has done it all for the Wolves this season as she is second on the team in points per game with 10.9, third on the team in rebounds with 5.3 a game and leads the team in assists and steals with 4.5 and 1.3 per game respectively.
St. Cloud State held both Bragg and Fillipi in check in the first matchup last season. Bragg scored eight points, in just 11 minutes. Fillipi started and played 24 minutes, but only scored three points as she went 0-of-5 from the field. Fillipi got back on track in the team's second game, scoring 14 points. However, she struggled to shoot as she only made three of her 10 field goal attempts. Fillipi also recorded give rebounds, four blocks, two steals, and two assists. Bragg did not play in the second game.
Paula Krueger enters her sixth season as the Wolves head coach and her 15th overall year with the program. In her tenure, Krueger has put together a record of 66-73 and has not finished higher than sixth in the conference. Krueger is looking to build off an 18-12 campaign last season that saw Northern State finish sixth in the conference and record a first round victory over Upper Iowa in the NSIC Tournament.
SCOUTING MSU Moorhead
Minnesota State Moorhead comes into this matchup winless posting a record of 0-7 and 0-2 in the conference. Through those seven losses, Moorhead has an average point differential of -12. Junior guard Natalie Jens leads the Dragons with averages of 14 points per game, 4.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.9 steals. Sophomore forward Terryn Johnson is also in double figures for Moorhead with 10.1 points per game and a team high 7.1 rebounds per game.
In the first matchup against St. Cloud a season ago, Jens scored 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Johnson only scored four points and grabbed five rebounds. The Huskies held both players in check in the second game, as Jens and Johnson scored less than eight points.
Karla Nelson heads into her 24th season as the Dragons head coach. Nelson is highly respected in the NSIC and has been awarded NSIC Coach of the Year in four times during her tenure. Under Nelson's leadership, MSU Moorhead has produced 21 straight winning seasons with a record of 399-248. Nelson is hoping to turn around this Dragon season and produce her 22nd straight winning season.
MSU Moorhead will host Bemidji State on Friday before playing St. Cloud on Saturday.

Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) was named to the NSIC Women's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 27 for her contributions over the weekend. Eggebrecht averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 35 minutes per game while scoring a season-high 16-points against Northern Michigan. She has scored 10+ points in seven consecutive games, dating back to last season. The honor is the first of Eggebrecht's career.
