SCSU hosts SVSU on Friday, DU on Sunday
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State Men's Soccer team opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this week with two home matches. The Huskies host Saginaw Valley State (2-2-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on Friday, Sep. 15 and Davenport (1-1-2, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on Sunday, Sep. 17. Friday's match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT and Sunday's game is slated to start at noon CT.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State (0-3-1, 0-0-0 GLIAC) fell to Truman State (1-1-0, 0-0-0 GLVC), 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Husky Stadium. Senior midfielder Mika Folstad (St. Paul, Minn.) drew a foul in the penalty box and fifth-year midfielder Zinedine Kroeten (St. Louis Park, Minn.) converted the penalty kick for his first goal of the season and the lone Huskies goal in the game.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday's match against Saginaw Valley State will be the fifth time and third consecutive year that the programs face off. All four previous matchups have been during regular season GLIAC play, twice in 2021 and twice in 2022. SCSU is 0-4-0 all-time against the Cardinals. Last year SVSU won the matchups 3-0 and 4-2.
Sunday's match against Davenport will be the sixth matchup all-time between the teams and the third consecutive year the teams play each other as a part of GLIAC play. Four of the matchups have come in regular season play and one came in the GLIAC Tournament a year ago, when the Panthers beat SCSU 3-2. In the first regular season match last year, DU won 4-0 while the second game finished a 2-2 draw. The Huskies hold a 0-4-1 record all-time against Davenport.
SCOUTING SAGINAW VALLEY STATE
The Cardinals, led by fifth-year head coach Louis Barrow, went 14-1-5 last year, winning the GLIAC regular season with a record of 9-0-3. SVSU also won the GLIAC Tournament before losing to Lake Erie on penalties in the NCAA DII Super Region 3 Quarterfinal. This year, Saginaw Valley State was picked to finish first in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Cardinals started their season 0-2 after playing two road games, but have rebounded as of late, winning their last two games at home, bringing their record to 2-2. Junior forward Jonathan Monney has scored three goals and senior forward Jayden Cameron has scored two goals and assisted on one. The Cardinals have used two goalkeepers with sophomore Nick Kay making the first two starts and junior Jack Simms making the last two, saving 10 and nine shots respectively. Both have given up four goals in their 180 minutes between the posts.

DU is led by twelfth-year head coach Chris Hughes and amassed an 8-8-3 record last season. The Panthers went 5-4-3 in GLIAC play last year finishing third in the regular season standings. They advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Championship after beating the second-seeded UW-Parkside in the semifinal, 3-0. This year, Davenport was picked to finish third in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll and have opened the season 1-1-2. DU will open GLIAC play at Northern Michigan on Friday before traveling to St. Cloud to face the Huskies. The Panthers tied their first two matches against ranked opponents on the road, No. 8 Maryville and No. 15 Illinois. DU is 1-1-0 in its last two matches at home, dropping a match against Tiffin and beating Northwood. Sophomore forward Vitalis Takawira Jr. leads the team with three goals while graduate student midfielder Eoin Broughan and sophomore forward Andrew Dykstra have scored two goals each. The Panthers have used three players between the posts in their first four games. Redshirt senior Bobby Curran leads the group with two starts, 156 minutes and 13 saves while freshman Tommy Farrell has made one start, appeared in two games, played 157 minutes and made five saves.
