St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Wins Defensive Battle on the Road

Huskies force 17 turnovers in 55-41 slugfest victory
WINONA, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (11-7 overall, 8-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) came out on top in a defensive battle against Winona State, 55-41 on Saturday at McCown Gymnasium.
The Huskies trailed by two points after the first and held a mere one-point lead at the half but ramped up their defensive pressure in the second half, limiting Winona State (5-14, 4-10 NSIC) to 18 points in the final 20 minutes. The Warriors only managed nine points in each of the final two quarters on a combined 5-of-24 (20.8) shooting and turned the ball over nine times leading to nine SCSU points.

The Huskies conclude their three-game road stretch when they travel to play Minnesota Crookston on Thursday (February 1). The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston. - Senior guard Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.) nearly recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds. She also tallied two steals.
- Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) scored a team-high 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, grabbed four rebounds, blocked three shots and dished out two assists.
- Freshman guard Alana Zarneke (Appleton, Wis.) scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed four rebounds.
- After the win, SCSU is now 29-19 all-time against Winona State.
- SCSU led the game in field goal percentage (34.4%-25.5%), field goals (21-14), total rebounds (13-28—41 – 11-28—39), assists (7-4), steals (6-5), blocks (7-4), points off turnovers (14-2), points in the paint (26-20), second-chance points (15-2), fast break points (7-2) and bench points (23-16).
- WSU led in three-point percentage (19.0%-18.2%) and free throw percentage (81.8%-56.3%).
- Both teams made four three pointers and nine free throws.
- Draheim set a new career-high in rebounds (eight) and tied her season high in three pointers (two). She has scored 10+ points seven times this season. She has made 2+ threes in six games. She has tallied 2+ steals in 12 games including three in a row including six of the last eight.
- Sawicki has scored 11+ points in 11 games this season including eight of the last 10. She has grabbed at least four rebounds in all but one game this season. She has tallied 3+ blocks in four games.
- Zarneke set new career-highs in field goals (five), field goal attempts (nine) and rebounds (four – tie). She has scored 10+ points in two games. She has grabbed four rebounds in back-to-back games.
- Senior forward Jasmine Litt (Pulaski, Wis.) scored nine points. She scored 9+ points for the seventh time this season.
- Freshman forward Paige Lambe (Verona, Wis.) scored four points, grabbed a career-high six rebounds and blocked three shots. She has scored 4+ points in 10 games this season including five of the last six. She has blocked 3+ shots three times.
- Senior guard Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.) grabbed a season-high seven rebounds and scored three points. She has scored 3+ points in nine games this season.
- Senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) scored four points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists. She has scored 4+ points in 12 games this season.
- Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) scored four points and has been held to under double-digit points in back-to-back games for the second time in her collegiate career.
