Northern State Uses Big Second Half to Take Down St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball

Huskies fall despite putting four in double figures
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (9-13 overall, 5-11 NSIC) couldn't hold on to its first half lead on Saturday afternoon, eventually falling 83-76 to Northern State at Halenbeck Hall.
SCSU took advantage of the poor shooting by the Wolves in the first half, taking a 33-27 lead into the halftime break. NSU stormed back into the game during the second half, shooting 63.3% (19-of-30) from the field including 54.5% (6-of-11) from three and 100% (12-of-12) from the free throw line. The Huskies shot over 53% from the field in the final 20 minutes but it could not keep pace with NSU.
Northern State had the games two top scorers, Jacksen Moni with 31 and Augustin Reede with 22. 23 of Moni's 31 came in the second half on 8-of-10 shooting and 8-of-8 from the line. He shot 10-of-14 for the game and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. 16 of Reede's 22 came in the second half including 4-of-6 from three and 4-of-4 from the line. He finished the game 6-of-11 from downtown.

The Huskies play two games next week, one at Halenbeck Hall and the other on the road. SCSU will host UMary on Thursday and travel to Minot State on Sunday. Tipoff for Thursday's game is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and Sunday's game will be played at 3:00 p.m. CT. - Freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee) scored a team-high 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field including 2-of-3 from three.
- Freshman Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.
- Graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) scored 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed three rebounds.
- Senior Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia) scored 10 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field including 2-of-2 from three. He also dished out four assists.
- After the loss, SCSU is now 31-30 all-time against Northern State.
- SCSU led the game in field goal percentage (49.2-48.3), field goals (31-28), three-pointers (9-8), total rebounds (10-27—37 – 6-24—30), assists (19-9), points in the paint (40-34), second chance points (10-7), fast break points (3-1) and bench points (37-4).
- NSU led in three-point percentage (33.3-31.0), free throw percentage (79.2-55.6), free throws (19-5), steals (5-1) and points off turnovers (17-5).
- Both teams blocked two shots.
- Allen tied his career high nine field goals and came up three points shy of his career-high in points. It is the second time this season he has scored 20+ points.
- Hawks logged a career-high 27 minutes and dished out a career-high two assists in his second collegiate start. He tied career-highs in field goals (five) and free throw attempts (five). He has scored 11+ points in five games this season and made 5+ field goals in three consecutive games. He is now shooting over 50% from the field on the season. He has grabbed 7+ rebounds seven times.
- Taylor scored in double figures for the first time since January 20 against Augustana. He has scored 11+ points seven times this season. He has grabbed 3+ rebounds in 15 games this season.
- Mutimer scored in double figures for the first time in 14 games (Dec. 9, 2023). He has scored 10+ points three times this season and has dished out 4+ assists in 10 games this season including the last four. Third game with 2+ three point makes.
- Freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) scored seven points, dished out five assists and grabbed three rebounds. His five assists tied his career high. He has scored 7+ points in 19 games this season including nine of the last 10. He has dished out 5+ assists in two games and grabbed 3+ rebounds in 19.
- Senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) scored six points and grabbed six rebounds. He has scored 6+ points in 15 games this season and has grabbed 6+ rebounds in four.
- Freshman Nate Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) grabbed nine rebounds, scored five points and dished out three assists. He logged a career-high 31 minutes and made his second career start. His nine rebounds tie his career-high, from his first start two games ago at Winona State. He has scored 5+ points in nine games this season, including the last five and tallied 3+ assists in three.
- Freshman Vance Peiffer (Waukee, Iowa) scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting and recorded three rebounds. He has scored 6+ points in 12 games this season and grabbed 3+ rebounds in 11.
