Huskies outscore Southwest Minnesota State, Bemidji State 14-6 in pair of wins
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (3-1, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) swept its second and final day of the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud on Sunday. The Huskies beat Southwest Minnesota State, 9-6 and blanked Bemidji State, 5-0.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 9, SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 6
After the Huskies plated two runs in the first inning, there were runs scored in each of the next six half innings. SMSU (0-4, 0-0 NSIC) added two in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth, while the Huskies scored one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to give the Huskies an 8-5 lead heading into the fifth inning. SCSU scored an insurance run in the fifth, while the Mustangs got one back in the top half of the seventh.
TOP HUSKIES
After a Holmes solo home run in the second inning, the Huskies took their first lead of the day. Frechette hit an RBI-single in the third to double the Huskies lead before senior utility Rainna Stangle (Sartell, Minn.) was used as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and made the most of her opportunity, hitting a three-run home run to extend the SCSU lead to 5-0.
Junior right handed pitcher Macey Clark (Winneconne, Wis.) was fantastic in her second start of the season, tossing six scoreless innings to earn her first win as a Husky.
