St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Drops Series Finale to No. 4 Western Michigan

Burnevik scores 12th goal of freshman campaign in setback
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-16-1, 4-13-1 NCHC) gave up two goals in the first 3:33 and couldn't comeback, falling 6-2 to No. 4 Western Michigan (20-5-1, 13-2-1 NCHC) on Saturday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Broncos scored three goals in the first, two in the second and one in the third to put away the Huskies.
WMU's Owen Michaels and Grant Slukynsky scored 20 seconds apart at 3:13 and 3:33, and then Ty Henricks at 15:37 to take a 3-0 lead into intermission. In the second period, SCSU seemed to grab momentum when freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored 1:16 into the period, but the Broncos would respond with two more in the middle frame. A power play goal in the third period made the score 6-1.

St. Cloud State will be off next week before returning to action at home against Colorado College on Feb. 21-22 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

- Sophomore forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman defenseman Thor Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn.) recorded assists on Burnevik's score.
- Senior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) went 9-5 in the faceoff dot.
- With the loss, St. Cloud State moves to 25-17-5 all-time against Western Michigan and 9-8-3 against the Broncos in Kalamazoo.
- On the season, SCSU moves to 2-13-0 when its opponent scores first, 1-6-1 when trailing after the first period, 0-9-1 when trailing after the second period and 5-9-1 when its opponents outshoot SCSU.
- SCSU won the faceoff battle, 28-22.
- Burnevik scored his 12th goal of the season and now ranks 20th all-time among SCSU freshman in goals scored. His 12 scores are the most by a Husky freshman since Eastern Brodzinski had 14 in 2017-18.
- Gross recorded his 10th assist of the season while Byfuglien had his second.
- After missing 14 games due to a lower-body injury, sophomore goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) returned to the ice, making 21 saves in 40:00.
