St. Cloud State Track & Field Set to Open Outdoor Season in South Carolina

Huskies sending limited roster to compete Friday and Saturday in Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field is set to open its outdoor season with select athletes traveling to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, field events start at 9 a.m. CT and running starts at 11 a.m. CT, while on Saturday, field events begin at 9 a.m. CT with running events starting at 9:15 a.m. CT.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State Track & Field competed at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Minnesota State at the Myers Field House in Mankato on February 28 and March 1. The Huskies posted 11 personal bests.
Senior jumper/middle distance runner Makaylin Christenson (Prairie Farm, Wis.) and sophomore sprinter/jumper Myesha Thompson (Mount Horeb, Wis.) each recorded new personal bests in the pentathlon, amassing 2,996 and 2,971 points respectively. Christenson also set a new personal best in the 800 meters (2:32.19), while Thompson recorded career bests in the 60 hurdles (9.61), shot put (8.78m/28-9.75) and 800 meters (2:46.04).
Christenson improved her pentathlon best by 224 and Thompson was 233 points better than her previous best. Christenson was just under two seconds faster than her previous 800 meters personal best which was set during the 2023 outdoor season. Thompson improved her 60 hurdles time by 0.27 seconds, her shot put by 0.13 m (5 ¼ inches) and her 800 meters by 15 and a half seconds.
Fifth year sprinter Katie Lavato (Buffalo, Minn.) ran to new personal bests in the 60 meters (7.67) and 200 meters (25.63 – indoor best). Her previous best times were 7.74 and 25.72. She ran 0.10 seconds faster than at last year's conference meet and placed three spots better than last year (10th) in the 60 meters.
Freshman distance runners Abbygail Nunez (South St. Paul, Minn.) and MerriAnna Johnson (Osceola, Wis.) each ran new 1,000-meter personal bests, running 3:10.41 and 3:14.61 respectively. Nunez cut almost nine full seconds off her previous best, while Johnson improved her time by nearly seven full seconds.
Freshman jumper/sprinter Kinsey Mohwinkle (Aplington, Iowa) set a new high jump personal best after clearing 1.55m/5-1. She bested her previous best of 1.52m/4-11.75 from early February.
