TRENDING AT THE RIGHT TIME
St. Cloud State is currently on a six-game winning streak after sweeping a four-game set with Northern State (April 5-6) and a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul (April 9). The six consecutive wins is the longest win streak of the season for the Huskies and its longest since winning six straight between March 30 and April 6, 2024.
The Huskies win streak has moved SCSU to a tie for fourth place with Wayne State in the NSIC standings at 13-9. With 13 of its remaining 18 regular season games against teams at .500 or below, the Huskies have a good chance to hold onto a top-four seed heading into NSIC Tournament, scheduled for May 7-10 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Huskies have finished fourth or better in the NSIC standings for 14 seasons dating back to 2010 (no conference games in 2020 due to pandemic).
NAV SAVING HIS BEST FOR LAST
Four-year starting first basemen senior Ethan Navratil (Albany, Minn.) will look to continue making his place in the St. Cloud State record book in his final collegiate season. The Husky senior has already jumped out to a scorching start to the season, hitting a career-best .368 with six home runs and 37 RBI, all team-highs. Previously, Navratil had not hit better than .289, which he hit in his 2023 sophomore campaign. The Husky captain has already produced a 16-game hit streak this season, as he has hit safely in all but five games this season.
Navratil has already joined SCSU's career top-10 list in home runs and RBI, and will look to add his name to a few more categories before the season is over. His sixth long ball of the season was his 25th career home run moved him into seventh place on SCSU's all-time home run list, matching Zach Hoffmann (2013-16). The Husky senior tallied three RBI in SCSU's last series against Concordia-St. Paul (April 5-6) to bring his career total to 142, which ranks seventh on SCSU's all-time list. He could also join the top-10 lists in games played (currently at 177, No. 10 at 188) and extra base hits (currently at 60, No. 10 at 70).
TOUGH ON THE MOUND
Redshirt junior Brady Nelson (Oro Valley, Ariz.) has anchored the Huskies' starting rotation, boasting a 5-0 record with a 4.14 ERA in five starts and eight appearances. Before moving into the rotation, Nelson has posted scoreless efforts in each of his three reliefs appearances, including a 3.2 inning outing against No. 5 Augustana on Feb. 24 where he struck out a season-high seven and allowed only one hit. In his five starts, Nelson has earned the victory in four games, including a season-long 6.2 inning performance with four strikeouts and three runs allowed on March 15 against Southwest Minnesota State.
Among conference leaders, Nelson ranks second in wins (five), fourth in home runs allowed (two) ninth in opposing batting average (.243) and ninth in ERA (4.14).
WEAPON OUT OF THE 'PEN
Redshirt senior Frankie Volkers (Maple Grove, Minn.) has been a key contributor out of the bullpen for the Huskies, posting five saves with a 3.81 ERA in 26.0 innings pitched over 12 appearances. Volkers has been a strikeout machine, averaging 13.50 K/9 while holding opponents to a .229 batting average. The Husky senior's five saves already ranks as the eight-most in a single season for a Husky, pulling even with Tim Rademacher in 2009.
Volkers earned two saves to clinch victories against Southwest Minnesota State, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings while only allowing one hit with eight strikeouts and a .077 opposing batting average. He notched his third save of the season in SCSU's 6-3 win on March 15, pitching 2.1 innings while only allowing one hit with three strikeouts. His outing was his third outing of 2.0+ innings this season. The Husky senior was then lights out in a 5-4 win on March 16, striking out all five batters he faced in 1.2 IP. He first worked the Huskies out of a two-men on jam in the eighth inning with back-to-back strikeouts and then struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the victory and clinch the series for SCSU. The Husky senior then earned the win in a 7-6, 10-inning thriller over Concordia-St. Paul (April 9), pitching a scoreless ninth and the 10th by striking out five while allowing one hit and three walks.
CONSISTENCY THROUGHOUT THE ORDER
SCSU's lineup has been extremely consistent up and down the order throughout the season, relying on different hitters at different times. Currently, SCSU boasts seven hitters hitting above .300 with a .900+ OPS, marks which rank second and tied-first in the NSIC, respectively. In its last time out, sophomore Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) was the go-to man, as he went 5-of-7 with two home runs, seven RBI and two walks in a doubleheader sweep of Concordia-St. Paul (April 9).
