
Huskies Score Five in 11th to Secure Doubleheader Split with UMary

Nelson spins an eight-inning gem in second game, SCSU scores five in 11th to earn win
GAME 1 – UMARY 8, SCSU 7 (8 inn.)
SCSU fell to UMary, 8-7, in eight innings in the first game of the day. The Huskies' offense was led by sophomore Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), who hit two home runs and had three RBIs, and redshirt junior Liam Moreno (Sun Prairie, Wis.), who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The Marauders jumped to a 6-1 lead by the second inning, capitalizing on a three-run double by Kacee Papierski and a two-run double by Luke Rhee. St. Cloud State responded in the third inning with a run-scoring groundout by junior Taehyung Kim (Marana, Ariz.). Then, a groundout RBI from redshirt sophomore Hayden Konkol (Denmark, Wis.) and a double from Moreno in the fourth pulled the Huskies within two at 7-5. SCSU finished the five-run comeback in the fifth when Castro launched his second home run of the day, a two-run blast to left field to tie the score at 7-7.
Out of the bullpen, sophomore Will Hess (Hartland, Wis.) came on a held the Marauders scoreless for three innings, allowing just one hit and one walk in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. UMary was able to bust through in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring on a single from Noah Hull to win the game 8-7.

- SCSU played its sixth extra innings game of the season, moving to 2-4 in those contests.
- Castro became the first Husky to hit two home runs in a game this season and the first since senior Ethan Navratil (Albany, Minn.) hit two against UMary on April 14, 2024.
- Castro took the team lead in home runs with his seventh long ball of the season while also recording his 13th multi-hit game, matching Navratil for the team lead.
- Moreno had his fourth three-hit and 11th multi-hit game of the season with three hits and two doubles. He's the fifth Husky to hit two doubles in a game this season.
- Hess had most effective outing of the season and matched his season-long outing with a three scoreless innings while striking out three and lowering his ERA to 5.40.
The second game featured a pitcher's duel, with UMary's starter Ryan Chamberlain lasting nine innings while SCSU starter redshirt junior Brady Nelson (Oro Valley, Ariz.) went eight innings. UMary scored first with an RBI single in the fourth before Moreno launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning. The Huskies were one strike away from finishing the game in the seventh inning before Nelson gave up a solo home run to Marcus Butts to tie the score at 2-2.
Nelson would stay on the pitch a scoreless eighth inning and exited the ball game with a brilliant stat line, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk with a season-high eight strikeouts.
Junior Cole Bakkum (Eau Claire, Wis.) pitched scoreless innings in the ninth and 10th, leading to a five-run 11th inning for the Huskies. SCSU had four RBI hits in the inning, first with Konkol delivering a two-RBI double to break the tie. Redshirt junior Eric Bello (Manati, Puerto Rico), redshirt junior Brayden Jacobson (West Fargo, N.D.) and Moreno then followed driving in a run each to make the score 7-2.
In the bottom of the inning, UMary was able to load the bases with two outs, but redshirt senior Frankie Volkers (Maple Grove, Minn.) came on and recorded a strikeout to earn his sixth save of the season.

- The 11-inning game was the longest game SCSU has played since a 13-inning 5-4 win over Ouchita Baptist on May 20, 2023, in the NCAA Central Regional.
- Nelson had the longest outing of the season by a Husky and matched the team-high in strikeouts with eight, equaling junior Bryce Brassfield's (Gilbert, Ariz.) mark against Northern State on April 5.
- His eight-inning start is the longest by a Husky since Sam Riola pitched nine innings against Augustana on March 24, 2023.
- Nelson lowered his season ERA to a team-best 3.80.
- Moreno had his fifth three-hit and 12th multi-hit game with a 3-for-6 performance.
- The Husky junior hit his sixth home run and set a new season-high with three RBI.
- Konkol had the go-ahead RBI with his ninth double, and 23rd and 24th RBIs.
- Volkers recorded his sixth save of the season and moved into a four-way tie for the fifth-most saves in a single season with Reese Gregory (2015), Logan Spitzak (2016) and Matt Butler (2019).
SCSU and UMary will finish its three-game series with nine-inning game at 12:00 p.m. CT in Sunday, April 13.
