Huskies defeat NSIC rival Minnesota Duluth, fall to Davenport (MI)
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – St. Cloud State Baseball (9-10, 5-1 NSIC) completed their play at the RussMatt Central Invitational with a doubleheader split against Minnesota Duluth (4-11, 2-4 NSIC) and Davenport (MI) (7-10, 0-0 GLIAC) at Chain of Lakes Park. The bats exploded in game one, as the Huskies topped the Bulldogs 16-7. In game two, the Huskies battled back from a 5-1 deficit to grab the lead, but the Panthers would put together a late rally of their own to win 11-6.
Game 1: SCSU 16, UMD 7
Duluth would strike first, bringing seven batters to the plate and scoring two runs on three hits. It was the second straight game the Huskies trailed 2-0 after the top of the first, but for the second straight game SCSU had a quick answer, capitalizing on a few Bulldog defensive miscues. Redshirt senior Liam Moreno (Sun Prairie, Wis.) reached on a dropped third strike, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Moreno would score on a grounder from senior Wyatt Tweet (Russell, Manitoba), and Tweet reached second on another error. He would later score on a deep fly ball to center from redshirt senior Eric Bello (Manati, Puerto Rico) to tie the score at 2-2.
SCSU would grab the lead one inning later. Redshirt freshman Max Robinson (St. Michael, Minn.) opened the inning with a single and was followed by a walk from redshirt freshman Jack Clark (Solon, Iowa). The Huskies would play some small ball, as senior Nick Ibrahim (Woodbury, Minn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Redshirt junior Hayden Konkol (Denmark, Wis.) drove in Robinson with a sacrifice fly, and Moreno followed him with a double to score Clark. Tweet would make it 5-2 with a single to left center that easily scored Moreno. Robinson would score his second run of the contest in the third, reaching on a walk and scoring on a Bulldog error.
UMD answered with a pair of runs in the top of fourth, cutting the Huskies lead down to 6-4, but that was as close as they'd come the rest of the afternoon. In the bottom of the frame, SCSU brought nine batters to the plate, scoring six runs to blow the game wide open. Robinson and Konkol both recorded two-run singles, before Moreno launched his first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left.
Duluth picked up a two-run homer of their own in the top of the fifth as the teams continued to trade runs. Junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led off the home half of the fifth with a triple and scored on a Bello groundout. UMD would scratch across one more run to cut the lead to 13-7 in the sixth.
SCSU would round out the hit parade in the eighth, as Ibrahim led off with a double. Konkol then drove him in with a single, earning his fourth RBI of the game. Konkol came around to score on a wild pitch, and sophomore Austin Baumhover (Van Meter, Iowa) drove in run number 16 for SCSU with a pinch-hit groundout, scoring Moreno.
TOP HUSKIES
The Huskies' bats picked up right where they left off in game two, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the first after singles by Konkol and Moreno, and a hit-by-pitch to Tweet. Castro would bounce into a fielder's choice to third base, scoring Konkol and putting SCSU up 1-0. Davenport was able to escape any further damage, however, stranding two Huskies runners to end the inning.
The Panthers exploded for five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame against redshirt sophomore starter Conner Larson (Jordan, Minn.). From there, though, Larson bounced back in a big way, working efficiently and keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard until the seventh inning.
The Huskies slowly but surely cut into the Davenport lead. Redshirt junior Hayden Frank (St. Michael, Minn.) walked after a nine-pitch battle to open the second and scored on a Robinson sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 Panthers. In the fifth, Castro led off with a double down the right field line, moved to third on a Bello single, and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from redshirt junior Josh McGuin (Toronto, Ontario).
SCSU would take the lead in the sixth, putting up three runs in the frame. Robinson singled and scored on a dropped third strike that allowed Tweet to reach first base. With two outs, Bello crushed a double, driving in a pair of runs and giving the Huskies the 6-5 advantage.
The seventh and eighth innings belonged to Davenport, however, as the Panthers scored six times across the two frames for the 11-6 final score.
