#10 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey on the Road to Colgate

The #10 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 NCHC) will continue its season on Oct. 25-26 with a pair of games at Colgate University (2-2-1, 0-0-0 ECAC) in Hamilton, N.Y. The game on Oct. 25 is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. (CT) and the game on Oct. 26 is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. (CT). The games will be played at the Starr Hockey Rink (2,000 cap.) on Colgate's campus, which is located in Hamilton, N.Y.

THE CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed their first WCHA regular season title in 2012-13 with an 18-9-1 league record. SCSU joined the league in 1990-91 and also won the WCHA FInal Five title in 2001. The Huskies also captured their first ever NCAA Regional title with a first place ending at the NCAA Midwest Regional in 2013. SCSU has gained 4 NCAA bids during the Bob Motzko era with tournament trips in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013. Last year marked SCSU's first-ever trip to the Frozen Four.
NCHC HONORS: St. Cloud State senior Kevin Gravel will go down in team history as the first player to gain NCHC weekly honors. Gravel was named the NCHC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14 for his play against Bemidji State. Gravel completed the weekend with one goal, nine shots and 5 blocked shots vs. the Beavers. He is a two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete, a team captain and a draft pick of the LA Kings. His father Jim Gravel scored 51g/50a during his career at SCSU from 1977-81.
LEGEND LeBLANC: SCSU forward Drew LeBlanc won the 2013 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. He is the first SCSU player to win the Hobey award and is just the second Husky to gain Hobey Baker top 3 finalist status. LeBlanc is currently playing in the Chicago (NHL) organization.
NEW NAME: St. Cloud State announced on April 17, 2013 that it will rename its home arena in honor of Herb Brooks. A former Husky head coach during the 1986-87 season, Brooks played a key role in the Huskies' move to the Division I level. The arena will now be called the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. On second reference, pleae refer to the facility as the Brooks Center.
NEXT HOME GAMES: St. Cloud State will return home on Nov. 8-9 for a pair of games at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center conference rival Miami (Ohio). WHERE HE LEFT OFF: Forward Joey Benik completed the 2012-13 season by scoring five goals and one assist in the Huskies' NCAA playoff games. He opened up the 2013-14 in top order by charting two goals in the Huskies' 3-2 victory over Bemidji State on Oct. 11. In his career, Benik has scored 10 goals and four assists in 26 games. He missed the first half of the 2012-13 as an injury scratch.
GOT THAT DONE: SCSU rookie netminder Charlie Lindgren wasted little time in scoring his first collegiate point. In his first start for the Huskies on Oct. 12, Lindgren notched a rare goalie assist on Kevin Gravel's goal at 2:02 of the third period. The goal broke a 2-0 lead by the Beavers and helped set the stage for SCSU's comeback in the third period that finished with a 2-2 tie. Lindgren earned USA Hockey Junior Goaltender of the Year honors in 2013 for his play with Sioux Falls of the USHL...did you know that former KVSC announcer Jim Olander is the radio voice of the Sioux Falls Stampede and former KVSC announcer Zach Fisch is the radio voice of Dubuque in the USHL.
FIRST TIME FOR THE SHOOUTOUT: The NCHC will use the shootout format for all games tied at the end of the first overtime session in 2013-14. In the Huskies' first shootout situation on Oct. 12, St. Cloud State lost by a 3-2 margin in the postgame shootout. Joey Benik and Kalle Kossila both scored goals in the shootout to force the sudden death round, which Bemidji State won with a goal by Rado Illo against Charlie Lindgren. Of note, the shootout only serves to provide points for the regular season standings in NCHC games. In regards to the NCAA rankings and the team records, all shootout games are considered a tie.
SPECIAL TEAMS SPECIALIST: Nic Dowd posted his first two goals of the 2013-14 season with a pair of special teams contributions. He scored the second shorthanded goal of his career on Oct. 11 with a marker at 15:59 that proved to be the game winner. He completed his weekend with his eighth career power play goal at 9:46 of the third period that proved to be the game-tying goal in a 2-2 decision against the Beavers. Dowd tied a team record with five game winners last year and he ranks 10th in the SCSU team records with eight career GWGs.
IN HIS SIGHTS: Nic Dowd is moving closer to the SCSU 100-point club. In his career with the Huskies, Dowd has 32 goals and 52 assists in 119 games played for a total of 84 career points. At the Division I level (all games played at the DI level), a total of 24 players have scored 100 career points for the Huskies. The last players to join the 100-point club in 2012-13 were Ben Hanowski (62g/51a/113pts) and Drew LeBlanc (42g/105a/147pts).

SCSU has enjoyed a strong link to the NHL over the years with 24 former SCSU student-athletes going on to play in the NHL since 1931-32. In 2013-14 former SCSU players to see ice time in NHL games include Ryan Malone (Tampa Bay), Matt Cullen (Nashville) and Matt Hendricks (Nashville). Former SCSU players in 2012-13 to see NHL ice time were Malone, Cullen (Minnesota), Hendricks (Washington), Andrew Gordon (Vancouver), Ben Hanowski (Calgary), Drew LeBlanc (Chicago), Oliver Lauridsen (Philadelphia) and Andreas Nodl (Carolina).
